Re: Error OR Toning?...

I should have also said that I have learned to preface all my VAM discussions with "Based on what we know right now!" That should have been the opening comment on the above post as someone may have a different set of facts or Messydesk may have changed his opinion over the years.

Re: Error OR Toning?...

When we encountered this coin http://www.1881o.com/82980336_63pl_28.3.html we thought the white "stuff" at the bottom of the right wing was an anomaly. But then it shows up on just about every VAM 28.3 so it was obviously something on the die. I think Messydesk's best guess at the time was grease le...

Re: Error OR Toning?...

Good questions. The only grease errors I have encountered have been white not dark.

Re: California Pedigree

True but I still find the VAM 27 to be elusive when trying to locate them raw. Then add grading and PCGS VAM certification and they get pricy. The raw plus PCGS cost probably exceeds just buying them graded and labeled. Really glad to add these to the collection

Re: California Pedigree

Well I picked up these two for what I thought was very reasonable money. I am always looking for reasonable coins in tough VAMs to expand the grading side of the 1881-O analysis

Re: California Pedigree

Thanks, I just had not been able to remember This week I had a chance to pick up two 1881-O VAM 27 coins with the California pedigree and went ahead with the purchase That would fit with your statements as these are the most difficult of the 1881-O coins to find in my opinion They are AU and not hig...

California Pedigree

Can someone remind me what the California pedigree on a PCGS label signifies? I know it was someone's collection but I just cannot find the reference.

I think a good learning experience on what they can do, but I also liked the before state and it might have brought a little premium.

Re: 1881-O VAM ID?

I did not see enough to think it was a V19. I would send it to VSS. John can help greatly and with the coin in hand can tell you if it is a known VAM. If I have questions I start with John so as to not bother Leroy when I know he is busy with other things.

Re: 1881-O VAM ID?

II got a few minutes before leaving and my first impression is VAM 56, but I am interpreting what I see on the right 1. There should be a scratch in front of the eye as a marker but when I look back at my photos I see that it sometimes does not pick up. This coin has what I like to call a fat first ...

Re: 1881-O VAM ID?

Thanks. I would have to see more of the scratch, but it looks to me like a production issue with the images there now. What would help isn't necessarily different pictures but better focused if possible. everything helps when you are trying to diagnose without the coin in hand. The wing neck gap is ...

Re: 1881-O VAM ID?

Good catch and a miss on my part. The font in the postings makes the ID and 1D look a lot alike to these old eyes. I will revisit the coin and see what I can see.

My first reaction is a VAM 67, but much sharper pictures are needed to pick out the details

Re: 1881-O VAM ID?

Based on the pictures I cannot see detail that would make me think it is a 1D. I have a page dedicated to the appearance of the coin at various grades http://www.1881o.com/aging_1d.html The 1D also has full hair curls at the base of the neck http://www.1881o.com/hair-by-vam.html Your coin has trunca...

I was under the impression that unused reverse dies could be held over and paired with new obverse dies the next year.

One Day Early - Finally

Well I am back on track and have the February update for the 1881-O done. It seems like there is no end to the discussion about a set of VAMs we looked at last March and April, and this does not put it to bed. It will take one more month to bring all the VAMs into the discussion because of linkage o...

I am not aware of those markers but you might try posting the full coin image. I have a web site devoted to just this one coin, maybe that will help you. http://www.1881o.com

Put it back for a rainy day, or start another Sunnywood type collection. This one would make a great start and if you can think of the right name for it the price goes way up.

Re: OT - Slightly Crackled, Need Opinions

I heard from RB a while back that he felt there were a number of collapsed dies around the rims and that it gave the coins a concave look in the lettering. This coin has that but also this crackling and I feel like this coin has a double whammy that includes an improperly prepped planchet. But I don...
