Re: 1924 Bar D

I think the real question is whether to de-list VAM 1A2, as the die break occurred before the die gouge, vs changing VAM 1A1 to die break only & VAM 1A2 with die gouge. I invite comment on this, as I am here to serve the membership. I have been extremely busy with work, so have not had as much time ...

Re: 1923D Peace Dollar Vam 1AF2

I would call this an EDS VAM 1AF1, as the die chip NW of IN is not yet fully formed. As would be expected with any die break, there are multiple die states. I especially like 1923D, as most VAMs are listed for die breaks, and are easy to attribute. Enjoy the challenge of putting together a complete ...

Re: Help w/1923-S plz

File lines can diminish w/ die wear, and/or can be covered or erased by subsequent polishing. Trying to sort this out is part of what makes this fun, in addition to finding some very scarce coins in the process.

Re: Help w/1923-S plz

Looking at my photos, I think you are correct in calling this a LDS VAM 1BQ. I will confirm this when I am able to look at my coins.
In any case, nice pickup! There are not many of these out there.

I have identified about 200 die marriages for 1923S. Give a few days on this one.

From photos, I would call 1921 - VAM 1, 1922D -VAM 2

Colonel, look for the remnants of the die gouge on bun, in hair, & under E of VAM 1B, as the VAM 3E obverse is the LDS of that die.

Re: Help "Re-Identifying" 1922 VAM Discovery Piece

The coin listed above as "VAM 2EM discovery" is actually VAM 1i. Note B1 reverse.
Leroy evidently reused the "VAM 2EM" designation for another variety w/ pitted reverse die. In my 2015 supplement, there is no mention of the die chip for VAM 2EM.
Hope this is helpful,
David

Re: value on peace

Welcome back DOM!. I am also working (more than) full time & have not had time to track pricing of Peace dollar VAMs. The more common ones can be found in the archives at Heritage & Stacks, and tracked on ebay. For the rare ones, there are very few (& sometimes no) transactions to track. The bottom ...

Re: 1927-S VAM 5

VAM 1J, w/ die gouge in initial but no DDR is the early die state of that obverse die. It was later paired with a DDR, listed as VAM 3. The obverse was later changed, that being the VAM 5 - DDR but normal obverse.
Keep looking, there are good coins out there, and new discoveries waiting to be found.

All will have the same doubling, unless it appears that it is a VLDS obv paired w/ new reverse. The photos do not indicate this.

I will recheck mine. I would not be surprised if this die had a clashed E at one time, that was polished out.
In any case, this is a tough coin, nice pickup!

Re: 1923-P Vam 1ck Vamcracker

As the die cracks are different, they are from different dies. For the coin at the top of the page, it is difficult to determine from the photo if this is some form of PMD, rusted or worn die, or ??. As you had noted, for this to be from a clash is very unlikely, & would almost certainly show strong...
