Re: HELP FINDING MORE NEW VAMERS
However, your right on track with your suggestions and we need to take some fresh approaches to things. You know how much effort I have put into just one mint/date coin and I can still get stumped at times. New VAMers need an easier path and we all need to be more patient. On more than one occasion ...

Re: Struck Thru Grease?
I believe that you are right, but if a die was pulled from production and rebaisned or repolished I always assumed that the cycle could start over. For example, if you look at the 1881-O VAM 5 the hair at the neck is almost completely polished out. This could only be done with repeated repolishing. ...

Re: Struck Thru Grease?
I am sure that there will be differing opinions, but my thinking is like yours. If you check these VAM 28.3 coins there is a small scalloped figure just below the eagle's right wing, above the leaves. This pattern repeats on a lot of the DMPL coins and is the same frosted looking area. There are oth...

Re: Struck Thru Grease?
Kurt28 I got lost on another issue and just got back. The coin with the swirl pattern above the eagle is one of several we found with exactly the same pattern, all the same VAM. At the time we thought struck through grease because it would be impossible for multiple planchets to have exactly the sam...

I also think it is important that one or two people take interest in each platform to keep it going. Reddit fits me because I am there researching other topics and spending time on the Morgans subreddit is quick. I am there most of the time to encourage only.

HELP FINDING MORE NEW VAMERS
I stumbled across something that is paying tiny dividends, but I think could pay more for us, I use Reddit for some technical discussions about various computing devices and I usually find there is someone, somewhere, who has had a similar challenge that helps. One day out of boredom I checked to se...

Thanks, from all I can see they are the same.
By the way, did we ever figure out why VAM 78 was skipped?

1881-O VAMs 68, 77A, and 77
I have now had time to review these coins and I believe the classification of VAMs 77 and 77A need to be removed and replaced with just VAM 68. I have pulled all of the coins in question and examined them in detail.
I have removed (moved down) listings for VAMs 77 and 77A.

1881-O January Newsletter
I have posted the newsletter for January and since I am between projects this one is light. Next month I will be deep into a review of the coins we have classified as VAMs 1 and 1A. There are twenty coins in total, and I believe I can sort these out with some study. Most will be something else alrea...

Re: Encouraging Article in NYT
The scamming angle is for sure a problem and I think often causes us to lose potential collectors early on. Like the TPGs or not, they can be a buffer for new collectors.

I was just happy to see someone write something positive about the hobby. Maybe this newest generation will be different and get back to some of the basics of life.

Re: Legal or Not?
My thought is that at that point it might be considered counterfeiting because the dies were obtained and used outside of the Mint. But just a feeling based on right VS wrong and thinking about currency.

Re: Legal or Not?
Having never held one, does it specifically have a marking as "copy" or something of the kind on it? My first thoughts were that I was surprised by the listing premium on eBay given that they are essentially "fantasy" coins My second thoughts were that if they are not marked, then once cracked out t...
