1881-O January Newsletter
I have posted the newsletter for January and since I am between projects this one is light. Next month I will be deep into a review of the coins we have classified as VAMs 1 and 1A. There are twenty coins in total, and I believe I can sort these out with some study. Most will be something else alrea...

Re: Encouraging Article in NYT
The scamming angle is for sure a problem and I think often causes us to lose potential collectors early on. Like the TPGs or not, they can be a buffer for new collectors.

Re: Encouraging Article in NYT
I was just happy to see someone write something positive about the hobby. Maybe this newest generation will be different and get back to some of the basics of life.

Re: Legal or Not?
My thought is that at that point it might be considered counterfeiting because the dies were obtained and used outside of the Mint. But just a feeling based on right VS wrong and thinking about currency.

Re: Legal or Not?
Having never held one, does it specifically have a marking as "copy" or something of the kind on it? My first thoughts were that I was surprised by the listing premium on eBay given that they are essentially "fantasy" coins My second thoughts were that if they are not marked, then once cracked out t...

Isn't this the same look as old silver coins that were rubbed with mercury?

Re: Legal or Not?
Well...............
Speaking of tokens as we were, what about the Dan Carr Morgans struck each year. I think I remember that these are actually struck on existing Morgan Dollars. This is another question since I thought I understood that only the obverse was restruck to change the date.

Re: Where is George?
Now that you bring this up, I do remember some of the sequence to design changes and I always assume that he made the models and did the design work. But was Morgan ever called upon to correct hubs or dies was my question, and if so, did he "tinker" and inadvertently create what we know as "VAMs"? A...

Re: Where is George?
Well we do know that things other than die cracks and breaks are out there in abundance. Little gouges, scratches, scribbles, etc. Some were done in repolishing dies at the branch Mints for sure, but some had to be done at the Mint before shipment. Just a little food for thought. How many did he per...

Where is George?
Well I was pondering this one the other day and certainly don't know the answer, but here is George working away at his job. In his capacity at the Mint did he in fact personally create some of the VAMs we now collect? In theory he would have been responsible for VAM 1 I would suppose, but did he to...

Re: Legal or Not?
Once I read the book I started to use it as a reference. As I remember I kind of read a chapter a day because it isn'r light reading. Once you get through it you will understand a lot more on the processes at the Mint.

Re: How static is static, how permanent is permanent?
I think getting Leroy's perspective on new or popular VAMs would be welcomed information. His perspective on how our hobby evolved is unique, and he has more knowledge than any of us. I have a feeling that if we were to vote on the current 100/50/40/Hot lists 80%+- would probably not change. But to ...

Re: Toned Morgan Web Site
I think you hit it right on the numbers. The old site was informational but not to modern web standards.
The other thing here is featuring outstanding sets in a way you can see the effort and accomplishments.

Toned Morgan Web Site
I ran into this web site from another collector who studies toned Morgans and I have to give them credit. This is well done and references the work done by Doug Kurz.
