Re: SEGS results

Awesome 00-O! You can tell Larry Briggs is no longer involved with SEGS, though, since they didn't properly capitalize VAM.

That is correct. I'm at about 90, so there's a little room left. Looking to ship in a few weeks if possible.

Re: a WOW 2021-D error

Keep an eye on it and see what it goes for. There's probably a critical mass of 21-D sheared rim strike-thrus out there that'll drive up both interest in these errors and price.

Re: my 2021 boxes are still unopened

Box #3 arrived today. And by coincidence so did the Visa bill. Still haven't opened anything, but I paid the bill. I guess the next step is PCGS. If you're looking to get (i.e., pay $18 a pop extra for) the First Strike™ label, the guidance on their web site states that there is no need to mail any...

The 1,000 per month that ended up in Illinois probably ended up in Cairo.

Here's the reveal:

NGC-64 holder.jpg

I wouldn't want this dog as a 62, let alone as a 64... and the "select" sticker is a joke in every way.
Maybe only a select few would pay 64 money for it.
If they're buying 64s from Littleton, they're paying a lot more than 64 money.

Re: New Orleans coinage 1857-June 1880

Had to do a quick double-take realizing that's really only 7 years (6 if you count that 1861 and 1880 were reporting 1/2 calendar year of production).

What would the purpose of this statement have been? An assertion that they're a relevant mint again after reopening?

Re: Check 2021-D Morgans for strike-thrus

Looks more like it's sitting on the coin than struck into it.

Nice close-ups showing the "raster scan" luster imparted on the dies.

Re: 2021 boxes are still unopened

Imagine having to pack the entire mintage of these for shipping. I've received the same ones you did. They look fine. Appearance is as I predicted -- a bit underwhelming, wrong luster, not very sharp, but otherwise faithful to the original. I've since shipped them to my buyer. I will probably buy so...

Check 2021-D Morgans for strike-thrus

I've seen two different 2021-D Morgans posted on Facebook tonight that appear to be struck through a sheared rim fragment, one of which has the fragment retained. If you got any of these, check them out before selling unopened.

Re: Water droplets on the 1885

Check VAM 9E. That has these marks on it, as well. Yours would be an EDS without the cracks if that's what it is, but die polishing would still match. The date position looks about right.

I hope to provide members with a little deeper appreciation for the "background" of their coins, and the things done to maintain quality or identify problems. The stuff that makes my day is when: - documentation confirms conclusions drawn empirically - documentation refutes current assumptions and ...

Re: PCGS has graded 2021 Morgans

Not sure they offer a minimum grade of 70, but maybe they do now. If there are no (or very few) 69s in the bunch, the bigger dealers moving a lot of these are going to be pretty upset, since 70 will carry no premium.

A bad picture, indeed, and I'll assume this is a trick question GTG and say 64. The fields that I can actually see look pretty clean.

Someone I know on Facebook got the D snd S I think. From there photos they looked dull not even burnished but will wait to pass judgement until I am holding them .
Don't expect the luster to resemble anything we're used to. They're not being made to reproduce that, unfortunately.

Re: 1878-V9 dot on wing

One thing I heard from Pete "Da NUTT" Bishal years ago was that there were dots visible on the eagle on some A1 reverse 8TF coins because Morgan worked in wood rather than plaster and nailed the finished products together. The dots were actually nail heads that got transferred with the design. I hav...
