Re: (somewhat blinded) Mint mark research question: What'd you call this?

Not ready to come back yet, but I will chime in on this. Any listing that is based solely on mintmark position is subject to duplication. This is particularly true for the O because there's no sharp edge to fix a position off of, as you have with the CC and S dies. Observation of the mintmark's rela...

Hiatus

I'm taking a break from the site for a while. I'm running up against a significant backlog and need to focus on people that actually pay me for my opinions. I find myself getting irritated by too many of the recent posts. Don't bother PM'ing me, as I've got work to do and won't respond.

Early stage of VAM 3 and that's all. I will tell you that over-magnification is doing a number on you.

Re: 1882-CC VAM-2 to VAM-2E help!

Maybe start over and chuck the VAM 2 stage assumption. Not VAM 5 or 7 either. Take a look at the wing on your right. Betting you find something there, but it's possible you won't

One cornucopia is definitely better work than the other, I'd trust that rendering of Moneta over the other.

Re: 1878s Top 30 Rarity List

It's worth noting that between the various other lists - Top 100, Hot 50, Hit List 40, and WOW! - you come up with 29 coins

BTW, Van Allen did a Top 30 years ago when he did that 78-S guide with Craig Lickenbrock

Re: Wave pattern 1886 P

This one is fairly simple, and honestly, beaten to death. See messydesk's comment - that should have been the end of it. This is by far the most common 86 dollar. It is the stage that occurs after VAM 6B. The letter transfer is worn off the die. There are literally thousands of examples of this stag...

Re: 1879S vam77 or a 77A

When you can look at it in hand, confirm the obverse is correct for 77/77A. This is the same for both stages. Then look at the reverse. The difference between VAM 77 and 77A is fairly obvious unless the features are worn away. In the grade pictured, this should be easy. On a VAM 77 the engraved uppe...

I'd want to see two examples to confirm that's a gouge. Gas bubble?
