Re: Because I couldn't afford the Morgan die cap
Great post, great coin, great collectable... Best part to me is the quote, Kurt28 and link to the writing. How much of our current problems could be alleviated by really standing as true as we can letting the past be the past, not sugar-coating it, not belittleing it, not denying it, but learning fr...

Re: Silver dollars in circulation - August 1880
Wickedly cool stuff. Thanks for sharing.
It would be fascinating to figure out just how rare, for example, the 1893-5-O dollars really are. The numbers in the graph suggest them to be much lower than I'd suspected!

Like the peripheral toning. Agree with the confirmation although my input should be considered more polite than professional! Requesting any reply in a non-Jewish way ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentile ) or the southern variation of genteel is fine by me. I personally listen to what the person ...

I have an relatively untrained voice here, but the pitting around the date and RIBU are not strongly there. I don't see an upclose picture of the first 3 stars on the right, but your FCP doesn't show them very clearly. Yet this might be a different die state where they're simply not as stron? The re...

I believe what you see on the neck is PMD, but you're correct on the VAM-43 attribution. Here's a couple of pictures of my PCGS64 showing a clear neck: A085 - 20220219_103653.jpg A086 - 20220219_104017.jpg A140 - 20211212_121013.jpg A141 - 20211212_121127.jpg A142 - 20211212_121253.jpg Hope these he...

She's been battered around quite a bit but shouldn't stop you from IDing the type. Sorry if I'm saying things you already know... She isn't a 14.5 straight away, though. You may have done this already, but always start with the lower wing feathers to quicly narrow your starting place: http://ec2-13-...

SSDC VAM Value Guide corrections?
Thought I'd post something here because I posted two on the SSDC Message Boards - General discussions. One in early January the other towards the end of the month that have been viewed a few times but not acted on yet. I know folks are rocking busy so no rush but wanting to make sure the information...

Re: 1888-S VAM-3a1 off eBay
BOOM! What a great find.
The abrasive polishing seen from the San Fran mint most years looked liked an early version of "anger management" than anything to me...
I have an 86-S with some great polishing lines but nothing like yours. And that clash is fantastic...

Re: 1878-P VAM-163/163A
Thanks, Dennis. Not many (32) of these registered in SSDC in all grades - with only 4 for the 163A flavor. The latter only being discovered in 2018 so possibly not surprising, but with the strongly shifted "U" and going back to the mid-1960s, I'd expect the 163 to have shown up more. I'm happy to ha...

A nice mixture and nothing ventured nothing gained, eh?
For those of us still guessing, was the hope a 14.19?

1878-P VAM-163/163A
Any sales lately of either the 163 or the 163A - NGC or PCGS between MS 62 and 64?
I happen to love this coin, but am not finding any sales data.
Thanks!

Re: 1878-S VAM 36
Any idea of value for 1878-S VAM 36, NGC, MS64? Thanks Don't know if you got your answer or not but the new price guide on SSDC gives it a ballpark of $195, only $10 above the listing for a VAM-19/19A/19B. Guide says graded VAM-36s in MS63 are only worth $104, though, which seems a bit low? I am de...

Re: Is there any vams that are with the 1921 d JOH-22 small break above m Morgan?
A pattern of minor cracks as illustrated by JOH-22 with no field displacement, noticeable die chips or scribble scratches would be a VAM 1. Most of the JOH listings have since had other stages noted that resulted in a VAM being assigned to it. As far as I know, this hasn't been found with anything ...
