Re: Attribution 101 page question
Yes, that's not a good picture for a very far date. I would just call that a far, low date. I know there are some VAMs that have been listed for questionable date positions, and perhaps this was one of them.

Re: 1884 very far date?
Far date, but not very far. The left edge of the 1 has to be clearly past the left edge of the 4th denticle.
Take a look at this section of the Attribution 101 page that discusses date position.

Re: Uploading and posting pics
I've edited the page to make the instructions relevant to the new VAMWorld discussion board. If anyone is interested in making it into a detailed tutorial page, let me know.

I'm surprised you found the old "Posting Pics 102" page and that anything still links to that.

Re: My latest from J.B.
I just got back in town tonight after being gone for the week. I think most of those pages are actually up, but they need my photos. Time to catch up.

Re: 1889 O with Rotated Reverse, Guess the grade!
Looks like AG3 to me. The 89-O page talks about VAMs with rotated dies right at the top. Don't even have to search the wiki.

Re: What's the difference between 1878 8tf V22B & C?
I'm out of town at the moment, but will officially kill it as a duplicate of VAM 22B when I get back. Meanwhile, consider it on Death Row without any allocation of green bananas.

Re: ….wow….
Good news, fellas, when more thoroughly appraised of the situation, the seller refunded me and says they don’t want the coin back.... Combined with the seller not being very forthcoming about its origins, I'd watch their sales for a while. They don't need many people to keep a fake coin and be happ...

I would send it to JR at ANACS. I will have a use for it if The Morgan dollar summer seminar class is held, in which case I'll arrange to borrow it.

A dip sure couldn't have hurt it, and it does look more presentable after. Nice snag!

Yes, VAM 9E. The smashed die you see is far more interesting than the clashed die on this one.

Re: VAM 1 can be fun AND evil
VAM 12 was an option, but the tilt to the right isn't particularly strong. This could be called high, or somewhat high. Leroy's listing for the VAM 7 calls that reverse normal and it is very similar to this one. Both you and I have raised this point before - like other positional features, mintmark...

Re: guess the grade! -- revealed
The $640 question is what does that mark on the cheek look like in hand? Is it a scuff or toning? First reaction is scuff, but you can't be sure from a single picture. The similar colored and shaped bit in the right obverse fields is not a scuff. The fields look very clean. It does seem overgraded a...

Re: 21-S VAM 35 - Zerbe
The Heritage specimen was graded SP65. The luster was different from what you normally see on a 21-S and the strike was stronger than average, although not crisp as it would be from new dies.

Re: ANACS question
I believe the CER designation was for a handful of plate coins from the 1998 book 'Morgan Dollar: Overdates, Over Mintmarks, Misplaced Dates, and Clashed E Reverses' by Kevin Flynn. It's worth noting no one else has apparently requested a designation from this work since. ... Sad. Write a book, pay...

Re: 21-S VAM 35 - Zerbe
Thanks for your insight JB although I would disagree that the TPG designations I mentioned are numismatic nonsense when you consider dies erode with use. Even in limited productions, I imagine the first batches are a bit sharper. Perhaps, but the designation has nothing to do with die life, only wh...

Re: 21-S VAM 35 - Zerbe
My post was not intended to criticize anyone or anything but to seek further information on how the coins and VAMs are tied to Zerbe. There are standards like "First Strike" or "First Day" for coins that must be met to earn the designation on a TPG label. Those designations are numismatic nonsense,...
