Re: 1878 S Broken 'r' in trust, broken 4th star on both coins.
Roger, SF had some very interesting guys working at that mint the first few years. I am very surprised they never tried to " improve " on the 4th star or the R in TRUST. They did about everything else to the dies. The working die is recessed and it seems it could have been worked on. No sure the rel...

Re: 78s v103
In hand. lmao. I have over 40 examples of the V103 die varieties and in hand is funny as they are all buried in mason jars around the farm. Try clicking on all the links on the page. Die 3 has a full coin picture in the die 3 link. I dont know how to add it to the other four full coin pictures on th...

Re: 1878 S Need help with Vam. Eye spike and TIUST
My friend Lewis nailed it. The die chip below the chin/hairline is a 100% ID marker. One can almost tell what VAM it is by the amount of R in IGWT.

Re: Hypothetical question
There was a run on 78S V17EDS coins in PCGS Holders that hit ebay a few years go. Many are registered in the SSDC. All have sequential numbers on the holders. I suspected that they all came from an old roll. But there is no rule of thumb for bags or rolls. JMHO

Re: I need help, with 1878 S diagonal wing die gouges
That snooger in the nostril and the chip on the cheek indicates a V80. Looks like die wear is in play here. Not a V89. I'd say V80. TDITD though. tim

15,80, and 89 share this reverse. 15 & 80 are common. 89 is the stopper. Did you check your coin against V80, Bert. I couldn't see the obverse well enough to VAM it. Nice pictures as always, tiny

Re: 1878-S Attribution Help Needed
Surprised the VAM Page doesn't have any full coin pictures. Then again Im not. Some are willing to share and help and others want to hold the secretes. I spent years populating the 78S pages. I barely come on here once or twice a week, if that. tiny

A Master work on coinage is a book called From Mine to Mint. A must read for the Silver Dollar Collector. Read it twice. With a highlighter marker.
"American Coinage Operations and Technology 1833 to 1937".

VAM 100 is a tough coin in any grade. Total population in SSDC is 11 coins. Only two in MS.
