Re: VAM Repository

I understand the reluctance to let the physical coins go, but very high resolution images for every VAM seems attainable with some work. JB does a lot of the photography anyway and the central repository could be virtual instead of physical. In theory just doing the VAM page would suffice, but the i...

VAM Repository

Has anyone ever thought about keeping all discovery VAMs in one place? Or perhaps setting minimum documentation requirements that would include very high resolution photographs and written documentation so that we avoid the comparison problem over time. If we had one I think a lot of collectors woul...

Thanks for the shout out, still working toward a full set, but getting there. It helps to have a thick hide and some OCD tendencies!

Re: What exactly is a die study?

I will undertake 1886p more than likely, since VAM 20 has been my obsession for the past few years. Great idea and news. Don't get discouraged as the chore can seem overwhelming at times. Take it one coin and one VAM at a time and you will get there. Finding a discovery or two along the way is a bi...

I certainly agree with all your comments, and we need a lot of people doing a lot of die studies.

Re: What exactly is a die study?

Are the existing numbers just scratching the surface with a mintage of 19M coins, 161 die pairs, and 32 known VAM's? Personally this is where the fun is for new and old VAMers. So far as I can tell there is almost an inexhaustible number of VAMs, which means anyone can discover a new die pairing or...

Re: What exactly is a die study?

Actually , the third coin off of a die would still be an early die state. It is more about surface wear of the die. Identifying by die damage(events such as clashes, gouges, breaks and cracks) would be die stages. I believe you are technically correct since wear or condition would have changed very...

Re: What exactly is a die study?

By the way, I didn't say that early, middle, and late die states are tricky which is one reason I went with die cracks and breaks. I am reminded of the comment by Shelby Foote the great Civil War historian. He became convinced that everyone's life could be divided in thirds and that in each third th...

Re: What exactly is a die study?

I think this is a great question and you got some good explanations and advice from LateDateMorganGuy. My study is of a single date/mint combination and with JBs help I am documenting every die and its usage in combinations I can find. I might disagree with LDMG in that I think all work with dies an...

Re: OT: Any Stamp Collectors Here?

Well I am a one trick pony with the 81-O so someone more broadly knowledgeable than me would have to do the list. But surely there are about 10 VAMs that are easy to find, not that expensive, and a good teaching tool

Re: OT: Any Stamp Collectors Here?

I know all this is way away from stamps, but.... On the pricing front, I think I saw something on PCGS this week that has not appeared or at least I missed it. I have not seen prices for VAMs on the PCGS price list before and I ran into one. As the world gets more automated they can pick up auction ...

Re: OT: Any Stamp Collectors Here?

Hopefully our beloved coins dont receive the same fate as stamps have. I believe the solution here is to feed the system from the bottom with new collectors and avoid the stamp problems. Collecting seems to have always been tilted toward older individuals I think because of cost and needed resource...

I think this is a coin you need to hold and look at the whole. Every time I think I need something, I need something different. JB is the best bet before you bother LVA with it.

Mylar tear toning.
Had not thought of that one and if it was in an old flip would the flip have contributed to the toning or just given air a way in?

Re: OT: Any Stamp Collectors Here?

No idea really and I started using a lot of my newer issues as postage to salvage something. Coins at least have some intrinsic value that fluctuates with metals. Stamps don't go up with changes in postage and actually lose value. I thought about donating my collection to a local stamp club for youn...
