Re: 1891 O VAM 15b (I think)

Adding closeup of the NI crack. Per the 15B page "Radial break between NI of UNITED completes the retained cud. This is the dividing line between 1891-O VAM-15A and 1891-O VAM-15B." I know it's not strong, but it's there. Led me to 15B. The comment you site is merely a comment, not part of the spec...

Re: OT - The FIRST Silver Dollar Design Returns (not VAM-9)

Cute. But it will not have the sharpness of a manually cut design. It will have the same defects as the imitation Morgan and Peace dollars dated 2021, etc. Our mint could easily do better, but they don't. :( It's more than that they don't, they also won't. A nice, sharp design doesn't last as long ...

If you're going to keep a machine-doubled coin in your collection, make it a really strong example. This is a really strong example.

Re: Vam identification purely from placement of design elements

If Morgan dies lettering, numbers, and stars were all punched by hand after hubbing, would it be possible to identify the VAM just by using the relative position of each letter, number, stars, and of course the mint mark? This would be tedious for humans, but would be much simpler to program a comp...

I'm intrigued, even if only by the laser engraving of the master die. Hoping this brings sharpness back to the design.

Thanks @fogie and @alefzero for the help! If possible, would it be possible to remove the V60 and V62 from the dubious listings and add them back to the official listings/registry and add V70 Die #2 to the registry? ... If you have both VAM 70.1 and 70.2, send me both next time you send me stuff an...

Re: Double Date 1922 Peace Dollar

The bit behind Liberty's neck is a rather strong clash mark from the ray near the eagle's shoulder. I would imagine there's a spike extending upward from the eagle's shoulder, which would be the corresponding clash from the back of Liberty's neck. The doubling you see is common mechanical doubling. ...

Uff da!

Well, 21s tend to look worse than the assigned grade, but this is pretty egregious. No sticker in its future, or at least not a good one.

Re: 1921-D guess the grade

1921s tend to look a grade lower than what the holder says, just because they're 1921s. I'll guess 64.

Probably sent his customers a booklet run off on a hand-cranked mimeograph machine with 8 pages of typed instructions on how to search bank rolls of half dollars for silver, repeated himself a lot, and threw in some paranoia for good measure.

Re: 1884P-VAM-4..'Small Dot'

Thanks for the feedback information on the ' DOT ', John. I wonder what other reasons there could be for it's appearance. Some sort of test of a deviation in the manufacturing process, perhaps? I know where there's a lot of mint paperwork dated 1884. I have the VAM 4 in 63DMPL and 65. I should real...

Re: 1891-P VAM-13 still a "2 for 1" find?

Agree with your thinking. I suppose the logic is that no die combo would be clashed when installed into the press and the likelihood of them clashing significanly enough before the first planchet entered into the process would be miniscule but theoretical, thus the first coin of that die combo coul...

VAM Premium Obfuscation

I recently got smoked on a 1921-D VAM 3A in PCGS 64 CAC in a GC auction. It sold for $1150 with the vig, which is strong 66 money for a 21-D. I have a hard time believing that the nasty rattler with a green sticker on it accounted for all that premium, but the holder market is sufficiently bizarre t...

Re: 1884P-VAM-4..'Small Dot'

Yes it is! Nobody has ever dug up the reason behind the dots. The 1875 S16 Indian cent is another with one die inconspicuously marked with a dot, but there's documentation showing it was done to catch a thief inside the mint.

I have enjoyed reading this thread. While it often seems the VAMWorld forum traffic is down, compared to other sites specializing in Ikes (Ikegroup.info) and Franklin Halves (Franklin Lovers -can't even open that site now), VAMWorld is the "facebook" of specialized collecting!! Average posting on I...

Re: 1927-S VAM-4 S/S find and questions about obverse

I'm guessing that without a die study, there are a lot of dies that haven't yet been described fully. Meanwhile as a clear, strong repunched mint mark on a Peace dollar, it exudes coolness just for that. I just uploaded Leroy's picture of the mint mark on the 23-S VAM 6. It has nothing on the 27-S V...
