Re: 1921-p VAM-72A 2 finger guide gouges?
What I think is "don't". Thanks Dennis, I won't. I had my doubts.... I would like to take credit for drawning that circle with the nano-tech in the photo above....but can't. It was already there. GCS2775.JPG GCS2778.JPG ....just one more picture of 'thee circle'. I have been staring at it for days ...

Re: 1921-p VAM-72A 2 finger guide gouges?
I sometimes notice a hairline crack from the bottom, Second post of the "N" in "UNITED" to the outside of left wreath, on all pictures. It also helps to squint. I don't know of any 21-P D1 or D2 Reverse cracks from the N in UNITED to the wreath. Not impossible, but I've not seen that particular cra...

Re: 1921-p VAM-72A 2 finger guide gouges?
Thank you Ijs123. I appreciate your taking the time to help me figure out this coin. I made a mistake using the word 'clash' above. I meant gouge. I edited my mistake, several times and counting... My last photo looks like I painted something on top and along the trailing edge of left wing. My wife ...

Re: 1921-p VAM-72A 2 finger guide gouges?
Thanks Ijs123. Please take a look at this next photo. It seems it would be easy to get a shot of something that winks at you in bright lite, but that is not the case for me. Notice the gouge spot below the A in AMERICA. Only the Vam-3AB and Vam-72A has a gouge continuation there that I know of. I wa...

1921-p VAM-72A 2 finger guide gouges?
Hello all, Thank you for a great site. Please take a look to compare these two photos. Both are from the same coin, same camera (focus stacked) and lighting. I think it maybe a 21 V72A: GCS2698.JPG GCS2689.JPG i wanted to zoom into the texture of the two samples and the interaction with the fields. ...

Re: 1901 O Possible Discovery Coin
Hello, Do you think there is a crack in the metal joining the two pieces together? It looks to me as if you wiggled the piece it may break in that spot. I wouldn't poke it with stick.. #9904-6 in your photos is what I was looking at. Interesting. This is the area I was looking at; Screenshot_2020-06...

Re: odd PCGS email last night
Your explanation is the most likely one. I've mis-keyed digits before and ended up with weird things in my inventory that I've had to delete right away, so I suppose it's equally likely that someone else did it and didn't double-check before sending a remove request. it could have been me. If it pr...

Re: Acetone geyser.. PSA
Thank you so much for sharing.
I had no idea. That suspension of a coin using a shot glass or any tapered glass vessel mentioned by Kurt 28 is very interesting to me. I assume you then administer a rinse and a air dry? No touching....., (kind of like these virus lessons.)

Re: Acetone geyser.. PSA
So I was running low on acetone and got a new quart at Walmart. When I get home I usually "burp" my new acetone bottles as they expand a bit on the shelves. Well, this time it exploded on my face like Old Faithful. Not too bad, I quickly washed my face and arms and my eyelids did their job in quick...

Re: Acetone geyser.. PSA
I worked with acetone a lot in a machine shop. It is a great cleaner for grease, oil, and inks. It`s harmless on your skin and good for cuts. It is safe when used properly. Great site here. I am learning alot. Is the acetone coin bath an accepted method for silver coin conservation? I understand th...

Re: 1923 Vam 1CK possible Clash?
WRITERS NOTE HERE; I have edited the above materal. This may not be proper for me to do. It can make the important info out of context. How do you prevent this? Just don't do it, maybe a good answer. On the other hand I have discovered this new stuff I think is of value and (to me) fits. Just an at...

Re: 1923 possible Clash?
The convex radius of a Peace dollar die (obv or rev, hardened die) was 25-inches. Draw an arc with a radius of 25 inches on paper. The outside 1.5-inches along the curve is what the face of a Peace dollar die would look like in cross section. Thanks RogerB and Messydesk, I am sitting at a 48"rd. Ta...

Re: 1923 possible Clash?
That's a feed finger scrape, not a clash mark. Very common. The feed fingers that push finished coins out of the coining chamber sometimes lightly scrape the anvil die (Peace dollar obverse) repetitively enough to impart a shiny spot that grows on the die over time. Some of them have been listed, s...
