Re: 1882S Obverse of V3 Reverse of V8

Looked at my notes and I have one for the VAM 3 that says 'saw unlisted marriage with normal rev' . I went thru the listings just now and didn't find a newer listing that would fit the bill. I think you should send this in to me or JB

Re: NGC Tampering

I'd think NGC would take this opportunity to make their holder more tamper resistant. It's not really a secret that several generations of their holder can be cracked open with almost no visible damage. And yes, it is sometimes part of my job to crack a piece out of it's holder when it crosses my de...

Re: Attribution 101 page question

Yeah, you can make out the top of an 8 in the denticle spaces under the second 8. There's probably the top of another 8 under the first. These were most likely deliberate marks. Their purpose is speculative. My best guess is they were a 'softness' test on a batch of dies between hubbings. But the po...

You got it - RH3LE5. Gets relatively simple with a little practice.

Re: Attribution 101 page question

i Like the DPIS , although it is not really something my brain carries around with it quite yet , it is better and more scientific in my own feeble mind than the subjectivity involved in MM placement . Thanks from one of the new guys ! edit typo :) Hey Bob. Lets try one [1]! You first. (I have bett...

Re: 1891-CC HELP...

I could be talked into the obverse being the same as VAM 8, but that reverse is likely new. Probably best to tag @tmanhg for a comparison to the VAM 8 discovery coin

Re: Attribution 101 page question

Stuff like this is the exact reason I prefer the DPIS. For this example, I'd call it LE4RH5.

Before anyone else chimes in, if JB feels he has enough evidence to kill off the listing, I'm going to support his decision.

Re: What's the difference between 1878 8tf V22B & C?

I'd have no qualms about killing this off if it was a pop 1 or 0 piece. At this moment there are 4 examples (2 are MS) of VAM 22C reported in the SSDC registry. All four individuals also report a VAM 22B for their set as well. I consider all four as reasonably credible. What is unknown here is wheth...

Re: ….wow….

Something like this could be dropped off at any coin show where ANACS has a local representative. You'd just need to explain what it is and note that's it's for my research or Michael Fahey. He does the 'Detecting Counterfeits' column in Coin World. Another option is to give it to the Anti Counterfe...

Re: ….wow….

This example helps demonstrate how detailed variety information can help in detection of counterfeits . Another way to put it, is there is a practical use to VAM varieties just as there are for variety data in other series. With that kind of utility in mind, how could current (and revised) VAM data...

Re: 1880 S new VAM?

Your coin is a VAM 51A. I reached that conclusion from your pictures then went looking for the 'dot' on the S because it should have been there.
