Re: How did this happen?
Those are usually splotchier than this. It also looks like the basket prong at the top protected the coin from toning there.

Re: 1924-P: How would you attribute this Rim?
The dies were reversed for 1921 Peace dollars. The obverse was the hammer die for these.

Slabs are not impervious to gasses. This one may have spent some time in a hostile environment, maybe intentionally, maybe not.

Re: 82 O/S Die question
There is no indication that these were not SF dies returned to Philadelphia. Reverse dies could be, and were, carried over from year to year at the branch mints.

Re: 1922 Peace D over D?
Looks like just a worn mint mark. I don't know of any convincing repunched mint marks for Peace dollars. There's a 27-S/S listed, but I haven't seen one and the pictures aren't clear. Ok I will get some better images, but you don't see the shelf between the two stamps in the current images? If you'...

Re: 1882 GSA Carson city grand snake history.
I can't wait to see this one. It will sell for Big Money, but not more than the 86 die cap brockage. 40-50K for a GSA CC 25% off-center feels right to me. Then again, if it's the only GSA off-center being sold into this market, 75K wouldn't surprise me

If you're talking about the vertical band of stuff on Liberty's face, that's not a pitted die. That's damage to the coin.

Look at varietyvista.com for this stuff. That's where the official CONECA numbers are illustrated online.

The date was completely in the hub for 1878, so there are no MPDs. The stuff by the wing is just some light pitting.

Re: 1921 D VAM 1L[?] Is it 2, 3 or a new 4?
It is more pronounced. It matches the original VAM 1L. So which is it? The fact that it is difficult to say leads me to think the best solution may be to scrap the current 1L1, 1L2, and 1L3 and create new ones as I mentioned above, yours being 1L3. It wouldn't really be that disruptive, since most ...

Re: 1921 D VAM 1L[?] Is it 2, 3 or a new 4?
The listings are a bit of a mess, to say the least. All cite the die break at AM, which should really only be on the late die stage. What makes sense if there are to be 3 stages is (1) scribbles on a fresh die, (2) die break not fully developed, (3) full die break on M. The other stuff is noise and ...
