Re: Odd rim on 1883-CC GSA Morgan

Actually, that's pretty typical for a Carson City strike. I recall Randy Campbell telling me he could usually tell what mint a Morgan was struck at without looking at the reverse based on the look of the obverse rim. He was usually right.

Re: peculiar 21d reed queation

There are occasions where examining the reeding beyond doing a reed count is actually worthwhile, but there aren't many of them

Re: peculiar 21d reed queation

Those center lines are far more common than you'd think. I've spent far too much time looking at edge reeds and I've seen this enough to call it 'unremarkable' - unless you're trying to trace a specific collar die. But I'd caution anyone against this, as trying to match the line patterns and wear pa...

Re: Possible new finds

Probably just a hit. I'd suggest taking a look at the VAM 20 listing. Is there a die line at the top of the throat just under the chin?

Re: What is the correct term?

I would add that this is atypical, so calling it 'atypical die erosion' would likely be correct. This particular obverse apparently either wasn't or couldn't be properly hardened. It's a great story and it's reverse mate has a story of its own worth exploring.

I'm sorry for your loss. I've been thru this several times and it doesn't get any easier. But the day is coming where you'll think of your dog and friend and it will only be happy memories

No apology necessary. Being an expert with other fields does not subtract from my main gig. It really is the reason people put up with me and it's the thing that allowed me to branch out.

Re: Possible new finds

Maybe it's time to forget about what you think you see and look thru the listings for marriages with the mintmark tilted strongly to the left. There's only a couple of options. Imagination can help you once you understand the basics within this field, but honestly right now you are doing yourself a ...

Re: Possible new finds

Clashing occurs when the dies hit each other without a planchet in between. Clash marks are typically found in the highest points of the die first, and these will be the strongest marks. These must be present if there is even the slightest chance of any sort of clash showing in a deeper part of the ...

Think about what you see in that reverse image. Where does the G land on the obverse?

Where's the pic of the die with the collar clash that was posted a few months back? It's a pretty definitive explanation in a single image

Re: VAM PowerPoint presentations? Please share...

Here's one I did on GSA dollars a few years ago for CONA. Most of this is still up to date, but it's worth noting the 93-CC in a hard pack surfaced shortly after my presentation.
