Re: 78-S S/S line lower loop?

It's the other version, a face of Juno, at play here. It's kinda funny that a separate goddess with the same name would also serve as a source of bedevilment in this instance - a double ancient whammy

Yeah, typically those guide books only come up when someone parts with their library, most often after they've passed.

Re: 78-S S/S line lower loop?

You've run up against a concept I dubbed as 'the die is the die' a few years back. There's a lengthy backstory about me playing around with an 1851 half cent that I won't repeat here. In this case, this particular engraved feather is a feature unique to this working die. No matter how many twists an...

Re: Is this really what an 1878-P VAM-22(A) looks like up close?

Yeah, that's VAM 22A. The engraved feather is an exact match for the Oxman-Harnett 8TF guide plate. The obverse is also always clashed, a remnant from an earlier marriage. That clash episode is presumably the final act of the VAM 80 progression.

Re: 1883 CC Help

The coin in question is a VAM 5B, nothing more, nothing less. And yes, there are multiple minor stages in this section of the progression. I have a rough outline of a die study for this date and 82 & 84 CC. I'll eventually publish, but there's not really any new information that's not already posted...

Yeah, the thing on the 8 is die poop like you thought. VAM 38 isn't rare by any measure, but there's a lot going on. Great variety to look at

Look for a teardrop shaped die scratch at the back of the eye. It's a one and done marker for 38

Yeah, VAM 28. Take a look at the VAM 8 page. That doubling is plated by Van Allen

Think this needs another look. By mintmark alone, VAM 18 and 22 can't be the same

Re: Need Help with 1921, broken E Obv

The color change around this further supports some sort of struck thru debris error. Can't explain the flow lining, but this might be natural on a filled die that's already well worn. Wouldn't mind seeing additional examples

Re: Need Help with 1921, broken E Obv

I'd guess it's a strike thru, but could be an unfortunately placed hit. Not buying this as an actual die thing

Re: NEW R-7 Retained Cud 1921 $ with photos

I did just call this a VLDS and didn't split the listing. I don't recall my exact wording, but I think this is one I'd want to see with and without all the crack/break pattern to generate a distinct VAM stage listing

But that doesn't subtract from the present example being cool to look at

Re: Heritage VAM and PL Morgan sale Monday, 9/19

Bid on four coins & got stomped hard on three of them. The one I did win isn't earth-shattering, but it does move one of my sets closer to completion.
