Big VAM Dinner turnout tonight
Every FUN show features dinner at Delmonico's, a noisy Italian steak house. I think tonight was the biggest crowd we've had yet. About 25 people, some younger VAM-interested collectors, some collectors I'm meeting for the first time at FUN, and a few plus ones. This is what walking down one side of ...

Re: Trying to determine if this is an N clash
Half way between IB in PLURIBUS is 12:00 on the obverse. The knot on the wreath is 6:00 on the reverse.

Re: Trying to determine if this is an N clash
Ask yourself if the corresponding clash on the reverse lines up with what you think you see on the obverse.

Re: New to VAM searching and may go crazy
I'll reinforce "learn the basics." Date position, date repunching, mint mark position, mint mark repunching, obverse and reverse hub types, where to look for actual doubling, how to not get fooled by machine doubling, notable vs. ignorable die clashes, cracks, and breaks. Some dates let you divide a...

Re: 1878s Vam 8a question
All the lines I'm seeing are rather deep planchet striations that were not struck out. They are not damage to the coin.

Re: Found a neat way to measure relief with a ping test and spectrograph
Thank you John and RWB. ...Yes, compared to a coin without a lamination error. I am thinking a lot of a lamination error is hidden; kind of like an iceberg. Often this is the case, but it's hard to tell. I find the prospect of conducting these sorts of experiments interesting, but I'm not up for do...

Re: A (wild) pick you might be happy with?
If this is a UK auction house, I'm going to guess that nobody there had the slightest interest in the die variety and that the "clerking error" was legitimate and had something to do with book bids being screwed up. Without the error, you might not have won the coin, anyway. A phone call might be en...

Re: Found a neat way to measure relief with a ping test and spectrograph
... A flap of silver must make a different noise, right? From a coin without a lamination? Yes, but you have to be able to repeatably acquire a ping from the two coins enough times that you know the difference between them is outside the margin of error. If you can get the same spectrogram 10 times...

Re: Does anyone have an 1894 S vam 2
I was hoping to find someone, that has an 1894 S vam 2 Morgan. On the 1894 S vam 2 page, it only has a small picture of the S mint mark. I was hoping to see larger area or more of the reverse. I tried clicking and sending George Mallis, who discovered it, back in June 1965, but I could not send him...

Re: 02-P near date with collar clash 3-4 O'clock
Thanks again all for your help. I'm happy to create a VNA section for the webpage and upload pictures to help others in the search for Plain Jane if that would be OK. Right now it's lacking that section. I've added a comment to the VAM 2 page that links back to this thread. If someone searched 1902...

Re: Found a neat way to measure relief with a ping test and spectrograph
Do coins of different designs have different spectrograms? Are they different enough between designs and similar enough within designs that you could tell the design by the spectrogram, much like Merlin does with birds?
