Re: 1889 "boomerang" clash
Kenny, I liked your reply. What I really like, though, is that I actually understand it. Clashed dies are not hard to understand, but it certainly took me a while.

Re: 1885-O with mm very far right
I did, but I am not seeing any doubling in the arrow shaft or M unless the doubling is just so slight that my poor eyesight is not seeing it. The pitting in the wing-neck gap appears identical.

1889 "boomerang" clash
Found this 1889 with reverse clash mark in the shape of a boomerang below the n and G. No obverse clash marks. I've never seen this before. There does not appear to be any transfer.

1885-O with mm very far right
I am not picking up the VAM on this one. Mintmark appears farther right than anything I am seeing. Normal date.
There is pitting or small die chips in eagle's wing-neck gap.

Microscope and a question on rarity
What’s a good and inexpensive microscope with imaging capability? I assume it wouldn’t have to go beyond 20 or 30x? Second and unrelated question: I was interested in the previous 1884-O topic. I have a VAM-10 which has an interest level of 2 and is a 4 on the rarity scale; it’s a “Hot 50”. I also h...

Re: I'm more confident with this one, 1897 VAM-1C
Thanks, Andy. So much for my confidence at the onset. I'll chalk up my confusion on this one to beginner's woes.

Re: I'm more confident with this one, 1897 VAM-1C
Andy, Comparing reverses, the line in the wreath bow matches. The die file lines at bottom of tail feathers match. And, there is slight doubling in the middle wreath leaf (outside toward rim) opposite U in UNITED. Comparing obverses, there are in fact die file lines around lower hair curls. Not sure...

Re: I'm more confident with this one, 1897 VAM-1C
In Attribution 101, I read that die breaks must be “...significant and visible to the naked eye.” To see the little globs of metal in the die crack on my coin I need a loop; therefore, I will assume no die break and therefore no 1C. I find it very interesting that the 1C and my coin share very simil...

Re: I'm more confident with this one, 1897 VAM-1C
Here are more photos. Sorry for poor quality. I took these through a loop as I don't have a scope, so they get closer to the detail but are not much clearer. I don't see lines in hair curl. The lines inside of the wreath bow appear different from those in VAM-7 (VAM-11?). The 1 in the date, while sl...

Re: I'm more confident with this one, 1897 VAM-1C
My hard drive crashed. I have a great close up of the hair curls and eagke’s neck-wing gap. As I tried to upload them, the screen went black. This will have to wait.

Re: I'm more confident with this one, 1897 VAM-1C
That’s what I think, but there are no reverse photos of the VAM-7 to explain the crack and die break. What do you make of that?

Re: I'm more confident with this one, 1897 VAM-1C
Sorry, I crashed last night. Here are some date photos...and a couple other reverse MERI photos. This morning I don't think it's a near date. The date is farther right than near date. Looks more like slanted date. If there is date doubling, I can't see it with my eyes under a loop. You guys are toyi...

I'm more confident with this one, 1897 VAM-1C
So, I'm pretty sure this 1897 is a VAM-1C, although I'm not sure my photo of MERI will show the displacement that is really, truly, honestly and without a doubt there.........maybe. The toning hides it. Take a look. Everything else is in place to make this a VAM-1C. So look closely above the I in ME...

Re: 1904-O O tilted left, but O/O? VAM-10A?
Yep, I see the chip in the O and at the back of the eye. The pistol hint did it, though. Sadly. If I didn't get 45, you'd have been on solid ground yanking my VAMWORLD registration.
You guys are good.

1904-O O tilted left, but O/O? VAM-10A?
Found this 1904-O. Can't find it in the C4b O tilted left group. This Morgan has a long die crack across top reverse; none of the C4b reverses show that. So I looked in C4d, O set right and tilted left and saw the 10A which has the die crack across STATES OF; however, no die "break" at first ST. I a...
