You definitely caught that feature. Sometimes it takes quite a few shots to capture what you want people to see.

I would think worn away rather than polished away. Later mintage seems right to me.

I see the remains of the gouge on a VAM-17 that I acquired.

Re: 1888-P VAM-7??

Loren, I'm sure that post is archived somewhere. Because Mr. Roberts' response to my question about "state" vs. "stage" made it so much easier for me to understand the differences between the two terms, I stashed away his reply in a special spot in my computer so that it would always be available fo...

1888-P VAM-7??

I’m thinking a Morgan I just acquired is either a 7B or 7C. Based on how I read and view the photos presented in the 7 and 7A Pages, neither one of those varieties contain upper or lower tail feather gouges. I also took the 7D out of the running because my Morgan doesn’t contain the additional gouge...

Sandlor has great eyes for Vams, Bert. He also notices those deer in your woods; but, they have nothing to fear from Sandlor. He can chase all he wants, but he'd never catch up to them.

Hub Doubling?

1880-P VAM 50A:

There's slight doubling of the letters STATES and more noticeable doubling of the letters in IGWT. Is this hub doubling or strike doubling?

http://www.silverdye.us/wiki/pub/Main/R ... C_1416.jpg

I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

Re: Date Doubling

It might be reflection, but I'm not sure. As you know, photographs can be deceiving. Examination in hand is the only way that a definitive determination can be made. Unfortunately, I'm not sufficiently skilled with a loupe to make such a determination. Through my AmScope, I see the same structure th...

Date Doubling

I’m in the process of photo-documenting my 1881-O VAM-50A. I have noticed that all of the date digits appear to be at least doubled. However, the description of the 50A doesn’t list date doubling as a listable feature. If the date is hub doubled, why wasn’t the doubling mentioned in the 50A’s descri...
