Re: 1900-O VAM-15 or VAM-15A

All with two clashes show the transferred lettering, and so call them VAM 15A. I'm pretty sure the third clash wipes out the transferred letters. Applying simply the "letter transfer" rule, this would be called VAM 15. Of course, that causes confusion with what must be a rather rare unclashed versio...

Good job John. Really like the gallery option. Is the gallery option going to be standard?
Yes. It can be put on any page. I'd encourage its use for full-coin shots as well as collections of "additional photos" that aren't primary pick-ups on a coin.

Wiki page sample

I've been working on automating the importing of the old wiki into a new one. Naturally, the markup is not the same between what was exported from Wikispaces and what needs to be imported into Mediawiki, Mediawiki ignores line breaks between text lines, and there are some characters in filenames tha...

It will be in hand shortly. Don't think it is a 5A.
I didn't even look at the references for that guess. I trained myself to check VAM 5A whenever I see the eagle's left wing look like that and there are no scribbles.

It used to be just strategically placed bag marks looked like doubling, but now you have to consider slab scratches, too.

I'm not able to access the link...
I ran into this earlier today in the Chrome browser on my PC, but it works on the Chrome browser on my phone. I have a note to myself to find out why. Try right-clicking or ctrl-click and opening in a new tab.

Re: A pair of Scarface 88-O from last night

I seem to recall a story about these Scarface pieces with the circle of toning on the reverse. Something like these were mounted on wood as part of a clock. The maker just happened to pick a couple of rolls of these for his work. Does this ring a bell with anyone else? It sounds familiar, but I mig...

Re: Morgan dollar pattern and privately made

If the 1884 J-1731 was simply part of a one-off "die trial in copper" set made for A. H. Smith, as is mentioned on uspatterns.com, then it has nothing to do with the 1885 J-1747-50, which was clearly a test of a technology. I don't know which die pair was used for the 1885 patterns, but it should be...

Old Wiki Page Editing Cutoff

As part of the migration of the wiki (everything on VAMworld but the messages), I will announce a last chance to edit pages here. This will probably be early August, but a specific date will be announced at least 1 week ahead of time. After the cutoff date, I will set the wiki to read-only and take ...

I have a small bottle of VAM hair oil. Jeff Oxman had a small case of these and was giving them away at a show several years ago.

Thanks John. Will you let us know when it is ok to upload photo's? I'll let people know when I open it up. I have it locked down right now so that only I can make edits. Meanwhile, there is a MediaWiki Sandbox that is open for the world to edit. If you want to try editing a page, play with this one...

Re: Wiki Teaser

Don't upload anything yet. I will probably test out my import scripts tonight to see if I'll be able to import all the current pages. This will probably include purging all pages from the wiki at least once until I'm satisfied that I can import the whole thing including images.

First things first. I need to actually get the wiki up and running beyond the default "congratulations, you installed and did initial configuration on your wiki" page.
