Re: 1878 S 1 of 4 "Funky Feather" question
This is a V-76.
The 76 does not have the "pimples" in the acid treated wing leg area.
Also, the 76 has an area at the lower part of the eagle's right wing that has an acid treated area that is smooth (no pimples).
This wing area has the smoothness like the leg wing area.

It is a PCGS 62.

There are four gouges above the gouge in the field, two about the same size then two shorter ones.

Sometimes I have problems with PM.

1900-O O/CC VAM 8D
A couple of years ago there was discussion on this forum about a 1900-O O/CC that had the obverse clashing of the VAM-8B but did not have the 8B reverse clashing; not an 8C. LVA indicated that it was finely polished to remove the 8C polishing lines. Leroy also stated that it was not worthy of a sepa...

Re: 1878-S VAM-96
I know that mistakes can be made, but who checked the 96 and 43.
For instance:
96 reverse has wind feather not engraved; 43 has engraved wing feather.
96 obverse has die lines in LIB of LIBERTY, 43 do not have the lines.

Re: 1878-S VAM-96
I would like to know what made anyone think the 96 and 43 have anything in common.
I don't remember seeing any discussion of this on this discussion forum.
If the move of the 96 to 43 hasn't happened yet please hold off.

I and another fellow collector have not heard anything from Jeff Oxman for a while.
Does anyone have an update on Jeff Oxman.

Yes, the polishing lines on the 86 die 3 and the 1G look very similar.
Here is my 1G die 2.

The significant attribution of the 86 die 3 is the polishing lines in the tail feathers.

78-S V-86 Die 3
I recently found a raw 1878-S V-86 die 3.
Here is a photo of the horizontal polishing spikes at wing edge below In.
VAMWorld does not have a photo of this attribute.
The VAMWorld description of die 3 says two spikes; it appears to me there may be a short third spike down from the upper spike.

Re: 1878-S Vam 1, 54, 61, 67 maybe 91, 85 and 94 need to be reviewed
messydesk asked above – “Is either VAM 48 or 84 earlier die state with respect to the reverse?” I have two V-48, a 65 and a 64. The 65 on reverse has a die crack that is above the E of AMERICA, then goes on the top of the R, then goes to the top of I. Also, the first has a die crack at top and betwe...

Re: 1878-S Vam 1, 54, 61, 67 maybe 91, 85 and 94 need to be reviewed
messydesk said above -- “If presented with evidence that the EDS obverse has the gouge in the cap, I'll be more likely to eliminate VAM 91 A and keep 91”. For VAM-91 A the SSDC registry census lists 18 with 1 detail, 2 PL and 2 DMPL. I have four 91 A -- ANACS 63, NGC 63, PCGS 63, and PCGS 65. The AN...
