Any ideas on what is going on behind the first 8?

Looking for doubling in the date, I noticed something under the first 8 (inside upper loop and entire left side of 8) which appears to be raised metal...pitting perhaps? The upper inside and lower loops of the first 8 are doubled along the inside left but the photos unfortunately do not show the led...
