The more I looked at it, the more I think it is a serious evil mimic for the reverse die.

The mint polished the die when they prepared them. Unfortunately, sometime they polished it a bit too much. The result is some devices got thinner. Compare 85-O VAM-4 vs VAM-1C. Based on your photo, I can't tell if there is or there is not a die gouge at O of DOLLAR on the reverse.
If the gouge not there, then it's not VAM-1D.
There are many other 81-S listing with the spike inside 1st 8.

Recently, Vam-mysterio had done a lot of die study which resulting many new 1879-S discoveries. One of them is 79S VAM-18B which shared rev die with 79S VAM-85 and with further collaborated study... also shared with 80S VAM-45A :o . Imo, this got to be the coolest news I've heard in a long time. Yes...
