Re: 1889-P with unusual clashing
Lee, I wasn’t expecting the answer about the rules. Sounds like VAM discrimination to me! 😉 I might need to hear the long answer at some point. I certainly understand how the complexity of all this can stunt interest in VAM collecting, yet the possibility of discovering new VAMs could attract newcom...

1924 Peace Dollar VAM-1D1 and 1B1
I have a 1924 Peace Dollar with clash lines at neck-jaw intersection extending down into the E of WE. On reverse, I can make out the E by tilting the coin in the light. My questions are twofold: 1. Is the clash line at neck-jaw intersection necessary for the E to be on the reverse? I ask because on ...

Re: 1889-P with unusual clashing
Lee, I found die polishing marks on this 1889-P in all the spots noted in VAMWORLD photos of VAM-43A. Where I am having a disconnect is why this 1889-P with triple clashing is not identified as a separate clashed VAM variety; there is not a word about clashing in VAM-43A. Are there non-clashed VAM-4...

Re: 1889-P with unusual clashing
Not planchet; rather, maybe the die tilted after second clash? Can a die "tilt" or become off balance after a die clash?

Re: 1889-P with unusual clashing
The links provided by Loren Albert were worth a thousand words. And, I also found the following helpful: "A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies are damaged upon striking each other without a planchet between them. Due to the tremendous pressure used, parts of the image of one die may ...

Re: 1889-P with unusual clashing
What am I seeing in the obverse field just below the cap band/hair vee? Arrows from reverse?

Thank you. I need to understand the process so I can figure out what I am seeing and why. Would appreciate book recommendations.

1889-P with unusual clashing
Can someone help in identifying this 1889-P VAM that is unusually clashed? On the reverse is an unusual tripled (perhaps quadrupled) sideways vee clash in the field next to right upper wreath leaves. There is also double (perhaps triple) vertical clash lines above eagle's right wing extending to n o...

1886-P and clash marks
I have several 1886-P with obverse diagonal clash mark at neck and also reverse vertical clash mark from eagle's wing up to n in "In". I have trouble seeing the clashed n. The clash marks at neck are weak, so I am wondering if the clashed n is just weak and difficult to pick our, or is it possible t...

1898-O
I'm looking at an 1898-O. I think it is VAM-7B Near Date, O Set High, Clashed Obverse n & t, Clashed Reverse M. See photos. I see the t. I think I see the m. I think I see the n in the obverse field by Liberty's neck, though not sure. Question: Can a clashed n be on Liberty's neck or must it be in t...

1983 P
I’m new to Vamworld, still learning. I have a BU 1883 Morgan with a long die crack running from the I in UNITED to the first S in STATES; it appears again between the A and the T in STATES. There is also a small die chip connecting the bottoms of the 1 and 8 in the date as well as a die crack connec...
