Re: 1921 S Attribution Assistance

Circulated 21-S is not going to be easy. They usually start out mushy and only get worse with wear. If there are no scribbles and nothing else noteworthy, I'd just call it VAM 1 and move on.

Re: 1896-O oval O mystery coin

Contemporary or modern either way it's counterfeit, so why are there listed "contemporary counterfeits"? There are almost 40 fake coins that have been VAMed and several in the top 100. I can't think of many hobbies where credence is given to fake items, regardless of when they were faked. I can see...

Re: 21P die crack break guide - guidance / discussion

My guidance is to start with the templates at the bottom of the 21-P page and draw the cracks on those. These make it much easier to see where the cracks are when scrolling through the crack pages.

I would simply refer to this as VAM 1AQ EDS and note that it is the stage before the rim cud.

New VAM-e Sent

I just sent out a new VAM-e to SSDC members. If people didn't get it, I'll blame the bulk mailing e-mail client software I'm using. This is the first one sent out since I upgraded my PC.

Re: Fresh Back From LVA on 1881-O VAM 1L

... Just above the mint mark and dots there is a horizontal line that i take to be a polish line and not a light gouge. Of the 22 examples only 4 coins exhibited this feature. Three of the four were DMPL coins and the fourth an AU58 that I could tell had been a PL or DMPL coin before being circulat...

No doubt counterfeit coin too flat. I buy them for 5 $ at antique fairs to add to my collection of counterfeit coins.
Nobody should ever pay money for these. It only keeps them coming.

That price includes the extra 2.5% buyer's fee for using a credit card. I don't think that was how the buyer paid.
If (s)he did, that represents a lot of airline miles or cash back credits.
Discover has a 5% cash back on PayPal through the end of September.

Re: 1880-P I'm stuck - Help or suggestions please

There aren't many with the pincers on top of the 2nd 8. Maybe VAM 19. Is there pitting between ONE and DOLLAR and/or a strong polishing line at the right side of the upper serif of the L in LIBERTY?

Re: Fresh Back From LVA on 1881-O VAM 1L

I still think it's occluded gas. There are markers visible in his pictures that are visible on VAM 8 without these lumps -- the scratch above the mint mark, and a couple in front of the ear. If we can get our hands on the VAM 1L discovery piece and poke it with a stick, this one would probably go aw...

That one is early 90s. Their grading was good then. Double-check the attribution, though. While VAM 1A was known then, not much else about 1921-D was.

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

...Believe it or not I ended up with 13 8TF in the deal, all between MS62/MS64 all PCGS graded in older holders. This was the first one I picked up. Im hoping to see what has VAMs, what would warrant variety attribution by a TPG, what needs to go to CAC, and what would upgrade. My eyes are bleeding...
