Re: 78-S V-86 Die 3
The significant attribution of the 86 die 3 is the polishing lines in the tail feathers.

78-S V-86 Die 3
I recently found a raw 1878-S V-86 die 3.
Here is a photo of the horizontal polishing spikes at wing edge below In.
VAMWorld does not have a photo of this attribute.
The VAMWorld description of die 3 says two spikes; it appears to me there may be a short third spike down from the upper spike.

Re: 1878-S Vam 1, 54, 61, 67 maybe 91, 85 and 94 need to be reviewed
messydesk asked above – “Is either VAM 48 or 84 earlier die state with respect to the reverse?” I have two V-48, a 65 and a 64. The 65 on reverse has a die crack that is above the E of AMERICA, then goes on the top of the R, then goes to the top of I. Also, the first has a die crack at top and betwe...

Re: 1878-S Vam 1, 54, 61, 67 maybe 91, 85 and 94 need to be reviewed
messydesk said above -- “If presented with evidence that the EDS obverse has the gouge in the cap, I'll be more likely to eliminate VAM 91 A and keep 91”. For VAM-91 A the SSDC registry census lists 18 with 1 detail, 2 PL and 2 DMPL. I have four 91 A -- ANACS 63, NGC 63, PCGS 63, and PCGS 65. The AN...

It appears that fogie might have the PCGS MS63.
Larry Briggs may still have the SEGS 62 PL.

Re: 1878-S Vam 1, 54, 61, 67 maybe 91, 85 and 94 need to be reviewed
The census lists two V-91 -- a PCGS 63 and a SEGS 62 PL.
I did not check every 78-S set to see if any of the current set holders have a 91.
The Profile for the 78-S date set shows "Hidden or Unclaimed".
LVA's 78-S Attribution book lists Larry Briggs as discoverer of V-91.

Re: 1878-S Vam 1, 54, 61, 67 maybe 91, 85 and 94 need to be reviewed
One of these, the V-67, has had discussion back in 2019 and 2020. The predominant opinion was that the V-67 and V-104 are the same. Here are some of my notes from Jan 2020 Introduction The 78-S VAM-67 was discovered Feb 2002 by Calvin Cherry; no revisions for VAM-67. Currently (Jan 2020) there are n...

Re: What happen to 1878 S Vam 96?
I entered two 96-S a little while ago
I checked the "My Inventory" and they were there.
I then rebuilt the sets and things seem to be okay for my 78-S set.

The Error Trends Coin Magazine small booklet titled Mint Errors on Carson City Silver Dollars ©1973, has quite a few pictures and seven pages of information on this 82-CC off-center.

gouge on obv of 78-S VAM-82
I was checking out a 78-S VAM-82 and noticed a gouge on the obverse. The gouge starts at the lower edge of the ribbon cap, goes to the left; looks like it goes under a small hair curl then stops at the next hair curl. Another very short part of the gouge is way over to the left almost to Liberty’s n...
