Re: 1904-O VAM 18 die marriage 1?

Yes, you have a VAM-18 Die Pair #1. Loren is correct, the "gouge" on the right wing is PMD.

Re: 90-O VAM 4C: Who got it?

I've dealt with this seller quite a bit and I believe he knows exactly what he had I understand the sentiment. But if a Seller auctions a coin for $108 and sees that somehow they did not achieve "market" price (the $2,500 ask is not realistic), and they see this type of post of this site, dis-funct...

Re: 90-O VAM 4C: Who got it?

I guess I might suggest that this type of post this soon after the auction end could be harmful to the Buyer. The Seller could possibly see this and not send the coin or try to trade the coin out before sending to the Buyer. Just food for thought.

Re: Anyone Doing a New Orleans Date Set?

I like the:

1897-O VAM-6A (findable), good luck finding a VAM-6B
1899-O, any micro o
1901-O Many good clashers to choose from. But I like the VAM-34
1902-O VAMs-8, 26A, 45A and 54. Take your pick.
1903-O VAM-4A
1904-O VAMs-4B or 28A

I see the VAM pages here for the VAM-52 don't help much. here is the VAM-52 page from the One & Done Guide.

Re: 1902 - O filled 2

It is a VAM as all die pairs are VAMs. However, it was not specifically listed because of the filled two. Leroy Van Allen stopped using the "filled 2" as a base attribution as it is a die stage, and not a marker in the die, meaning EDS coins do not have the "filled 2" (with some exceptions if the ob...

Re: Does SSDC Have an Admin Anymore?

Mitch, my only point is that based on my experience, perspectives like yours change when you sit down with folks face-to-face and talk. On the phone is not face-to-face. Coin shows and the personal interaction have a way of making things more understandable. A lot of folks find the socializing more ...

Re: Does SSDC Have an Admin Anymore?

Mitch, I am just curious. Have you ever attended a coin show and interacted with the folks like JB, JR, Fogie, Ash, Coxe, Crae, Doc, Brian, Dennis, Big John, Ray, Pete, Lewis, Birch, Russ, Tim, Rob, Pat, Ben, Dominic, Tom, Smitty, Mark, Roger, Fey, Jack Lee, Mike, Robert, Mike C, Phil, Dave B, Mike ...

Re: 1897-O Beveled Denticles

By the way, note that in Dennis' coin, the beveled denticles are very slight. In my VNA-3 photo (4th from the top) which matches his coin, they are more pronounced. But the coin I photo'd is a later die state with the cracks at STA. This tends to support the idea that the beveled denticles got more ...

Re: 1897-O Beveled Denticles

Yeah, JR got back to you before I did. Your coin matches the 4th photo in my original post. I have it listed as VNA-3, but have notes that it easily could fit into VAM-1. Keep in mind that I am trying to ID different die pairs, not just try and squeeze die pairs into VAM numbers. But past protocol b...

JR, I do not see many MDS polishing episodes in the 1897-O series that might cause this.

Re: 1897-O Beveled Denticles

I think JB may be correct. I checked the DMPL example of the VAM-8, and there is no hint of the beveled denticles. I do think they get stronger with die wear, lending credence to the feeder finger theory. On another "hub" thing issue, 15 out of the 18 reverse dies show the doubled middle leaves on t...

1897-O Beveled Denticles

Having just concluded a die study of the 1897-O series, I found 18 different obverse and reverse dies each. But what is interesting is that 6 of the 18 (one third) reverse dies have beveled denticles above ST or STA of STATES. So what is it, a hub thing, or the same tool in the same mint workers han...

Re: 1897-O Die Pair

Of course the call about a break with field displacement is up to Leroy. But with the coin in hand, it looks like it to me with similar listings for more or less the same thing. Here is another angle.

1897-O Die Pair

This is the coin I showed under a previous thread about last acquisitions of 2018. It is a 1897-O and it has a near date (some would call it low or slanted, or both), a mint mark placement set high and tilted right, and doubled left wreath leaves and above AR (another story for another time). Given ...

Re: Minimum Grades for Coins to LVA

The responses indicate the spread of things. From my experience, heavily toned coins are likely a no-go like Fogie says. I would not send anything in less than AU if they were my coins, but there could be exceptions to this for lower grades depending on what I see on the coin.

Re: 93P BIG "G" time & Extras

The LDS of the 1897-O VAM-7A presents a similar conundrum. I suspect folks have sent examples to Leroy for the clashed G and it did not get listed.
