Re: SSDC 8TF registry question

While all the banter is fine. The question here is whether VAM listings should be included in the Registry when conventional wisdom is that they don't exist, or not. Nothing more, nothing less.

Re: SSDC 8TF registry question

And by the way, I really don't care what the rules are. I can live with them either way. I know Ray and I have been living with the concept that if a listing exists in Leroy's library, then it exists on the Registry. It leaves many red-haired step children listings that will never get corrected, and...

Re: SSDC 8TF registry question

I think what a few of us are saying (and I said it before in this post) is does the Registry list all listed VAMs in the official listings by Leroy with no exceptions, or are we free to delete listings if we believe they don't exist? To me, this discussion is not about a particular VAM listing, I on...

Re: SSDC 8TF registry question

So, we add the VAM-4A back into the Clashed E set?

Re: SSDC 8TF registry question

I am not sure what the answer is here. This could be a slippery slope so to speak. If Leroy has not officially delisted a certain VAM, does it belong in the Registry or not? The precedent was set when the 89-CC VAM-4A was removed from the Clashed E set, much to my chagrin. If you can tell I did not ...

Re: Annual Mint Reports

If anyone wants access to the Reports of the Director of the Mint for various years, here is a link. I find it useful for my die studies. Most of it will put you to sleep. But buried in the reports is some interesting info.

Re: Annual Mint Reports

Ray, I have found much discrepancy in the Mint Directors Reports on dies prepared for the branch mints versus how many I find doing a die study. The reported dies prepared is always much larger than what I find. Somehow, The Red Book of Morgan Dollars by Bowers lists the number of dies shipped to th...

Before you commit to a road trip to Sidney, I suggest you give HawkeEye a chance to help you. Just be patient. Besides, Leroy is not taking submissions until mid-March, or later.

Re: Bargain Bin Conundrum

Yeah, I had thought about die polishing after basining at the branch mint. This 'might" explain why the feature is smooth if a die lamination occurred. But of course a scrap during hubbing could also explain it. Several possible explanations. No conclusive evidence on which one, or a different one. ...

Re: Question

This debate has been going on since I joined in 2006. It will continue to go on. I call it the beauty and the beast of an open wiki. This thread too shall pass, but will be resurrected sometime in the future in a different thread. But if folks think there is not bad info on some of the pages, you wo...

Re: Question

Because it is an open wiki and they can. Personally, I would defer page edits to the guy who did a die study and would hope if folks think something is wrong, that they contact the die study guy before making changes. But hey, that's just me.

Re: Bargain Bin Conundrum

I know this is a rhetorical discussion, since we don't know what caused this "feature". My conundrum is why does the "gouge" get deeper into the die (higher on the coin) when it approaches the devices of the left wing and back of neck? My thought was that if there were a lamination issue with the di...

Re: Bargain Bin Conundrum

And Chris, you said you think you saw this photo before. Maybe you did. I posted the better auction photo last June after I found it, and knew it was in the die. I posted it here on the Test Feedback forum. http://www.vamworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=70 I wanted to test the drop & drag option,...

Re: Bargain Bin Conundrum

I wasn't trying to throw anyone off with my photos. Yes, lighting can cause things to appear different than what you see in hand (think photo poop). Also the subject coin has been cleaned, so certain parts "shine" artificially and throw light from my Dino-Lite. But my point is that if you ran into s...

Re: Bargain Bin Conundrum

So okay, I was hoping for more responses, but alas, that is not happening. Go figure. So here is the back story for the benefit of whoever cares. I was doing a die study last summer, and I ran across a coin that had this feature. When I first saw it, I chalked it up to a planchet lamination flaw. I ...

Bargain Bin Conundrum

I am curious on what folks have to say. If you are going thru a bargain bin of Morgan dollars, and you see this, what would you think caused it?

Re: I overpaid... and I SURE DO care! (update 1st post)

Many of you likely know this if you have studied on-line auction photos enough. I have fallen for "photo poop" many times before. Things can look doubled that are not for example. Dennis made mention of something like this in his 1901 earlier post. Of course photos can be altered (think Photoshop) a...

Good points Rob. Let's let this conversation die and just congratulate Tom. If this discussion needs further exercise, a new thread can be started. Way to go Tom!
