Re: An open letter to all VAM members

... BTW, I've mentioned this in a VAM post earlier on this forum, this website keeps reducing my attached photos from approx 500kb to under 100kb, and rotating them if taken with an iPhone. So I attached two images in case it rotates. Please feel free to PM me if you'd like to discuss further. I re...

I took care of the reference on the 21-S VAM 29B page.

Re: (somewhat blinded) Mint mark research question: What'd you call this?

Mint mark 1 is centered and upright. Not quite high enough to be called high. The photo was rotated just over 1° clockwise. Mint mark 2 is centered, tilted left, positioned lower than mm 1. The photo was rotated about 1.5° clockwise. The lower right of the mint mark looks mashed by something, making...

There's so much corrosion (?) damage that I'm not even certain it is genuine.
This.

The rotation might also be indicative of it being fake. I'm not aware of any 81-CC rotated dies, and a 45° rotation is somewhat noteworthy.

Hey Dennis,

To me it appears to be a lovely EDS example of VAM 3CA.
Yup. VAM 3CA.

Re: An open letter to all VAM members

The other banter / pics I posted was my effort in trying to make some new friends on this site. Banter is a tricky thing. Any forum will welcome new people that stay on topic at first. Banter comes with familiarity. Not an official policy, mind you, but just the way membership in a forum, or any gr...

Spamhaus Blacklisting Issues

One of the features of the phpBB platform is that it verifies that your IP address is not one used for spam by using the spamhaus.org website. I've had reports from 2 users in the UK in as many days that their IP addresses have become blacklisted, but their addresses come up clean when checking spam...

Re: 1924 Bar D

I think the real question is whether to de-list VAM 1A2, as the die break occurred before the die gouge, vs changing VAM 1A1 to die break only & VAM 1A2 with die gouge. I invite comment on this, as I am here to serve the membership. I have been extremely busy with work, so have not had as much time...

The break at OF is the VAM 14.2B stage. Not super rare. The feed finger scrapes are common.

Re: 1880 O VAM 39A question

Hello, I was able to identify my first VAM on my own haha. How exciting! It's pretty easy to attribute because of the uniquely doubled date and die flake in the ear, small o tilted right. It's possibly got some doubling going on in parts the obverse and reverse legends, stars, ect. Could just be di...

Re: Hiatus

I think the thing to do right now is RELAX. Everyone needs to get away for a while now and then, and everyone gets slammed with work now and then. That's really all that's happening. Meanwhile, do what you can to enjoy the hobby and help others to enjoy it as well. There are some exciting developmen...

Yes, it's basically mechanical doubling. Happens a lot on 83-O.

EDS. Die chips don't suddenly disappear. No texture that one would see with a filled die, either.

What are the thoughts.. EDS pre chip or LDS chip removed?
The coin pictured on the VAM 4B page was viewed by me, John R, John C, Fogie, Brian Raines, and Larry Briggs in hand at the ANA show. There is no chip on that coin and there never was. The coin was VF.

The error was thrown because the storage on the server was full. I resized the partition and extended the file system so that we now have more space. You should be able to post valid images again.

Re: AU58 Paper Test

Circulation rub is more random as far as how the micro-abrasions show up on the high points, wearing away the luster. Bag rub is more scuffy in nature and tends not to give these gray spots. That doesn't mean that a badly scuffed, yet lustrous, coin must be graded MS-something. I had a coin graded A...

AU58 Paper Test

Not sure if I've ever shared this here before, but this is an effective test for telling the difference between AU58 and MS6x if you're not sure. I show this to students in the Morgan dollar class at the ANA when explaining what the difference between slight wear and luster looks like. I had occasio...
