Re: 1881o vam 1 L

https://www.1881o.com I am going to look at all my VAM 8 coins in a minute since JB thinks this might be the point of overlap. I have 22 examples, but the features we are looking for probably don't exist below AU, so make it 17. It seems right now that the first marker is the thin line above the mi...

Re: Legal or Not?

Thanks for the update. I have seen the NGC encapsulated dies and they are an interesting collectible.

We probably beat this topic into submission. Good discussion and fun to speculate about.

Re: Struck Thru Grease?

Most of the struck through grease "stuff" I have seen stays around as a white residue.

Pull this one up on PCGS and check the denticles and dates. It is covered with the stuff. It almost looks like soap residue.

Really nice find. Were there other areas on the coin or is this the only one?

1881-O December Update with Toned Coins

I have just posted the December update for the 1881-O web site and hope there is a little something there for anyone interested. http://www.1881o.com/2021-12.html I got into a batch of toned coins that have proven to be nice additions. One, an MS64+ VAM 27 Double Ear was an inexpensive addition and ...

Re: Legal or Not?

Neither am I a lawyer, but I am remembering that the printing of money and coinage is specifically limited to the federal government. My only real question probably centers around the reuse of government dies intended to strike legal tender for some private product or purpose. Yes, they are cancelle...

Re: PCGS 2021 pops keep going up

Well, either the Mint suddenly increased their quality control or the TPG's suddenly had a grader shortage, or something in between.

Re: 1881o vam 1 L

I will try to pull all my VAM 8 coins and see which ones have the line. I did it once before and realized there was a line on some but not all. But it has been a while.

Re: 1881o vam 1 L

I have 22 VAM 8s posted on my web site, so have at it.

Also, there is a small gouge that runs horizontally across just above the mint mark. This does not always show on photographs because of lighting and the faintness of the line as I remember.

This line is not on all coins labeled as VAM 8.

Non-Fungible Token https://www.investopedia.com/non-fungible-tokens-nft-5115211 I think because Discovery Coins are by definition unique they would be candidates and would offer VAMers a chance to recoop their effort and costs, and make the hobby more visible and interesting. Coins in notable lists ...

Re: 1881o vam 1 L

I sent the $10 gold piece to Leroy for his use in study. As I remember JB had some thoughts about a planchet flaw. I would recommend that we let JB review the Discovery Coin and if I need to I will send the gold piece.

Re: Legal or Not?

Well I think it has been well documented that the surveyors got into the hooch a little too much and there is a kink in the border that isn't supposed to be there. Atlanta was trying to claim access to the Tennessee River just south of Chattanooga as a water source. Obviously this went nowhere, but ...

Re: Legal or Not?

Heck, the Georgia state quarter used the wrong map. They chopped off the northwestern most county because someone at the Mint read an article about it seceding and going to Tennessee, which obviously never happened.

My point also. I wonder if it would be considered legal tender, just defaced. But I have to believe they got some type legal ruling or exemption before striking them.

Re: Legal or Not?

While the dies might have been legally obtained that would have been over 100 years ago. I wonder what the agreement with the Mint was in those days on reuse of cancelled dies? From the NGC web site: "After their useful life is over, dies are usually destroyed by a mint. Sometimes, however, they are...

Re: Early Scarface Auction Price

There are some crazy things out there right now and I don't know if they are selling, but for sure there are lots of listings. There is an 1881-O listed by a big eBay seller for $1,993.75 bragging it is a GEM BU graded coin. Actually, it is a N92 Cleaned coin with uncirculated details. Just for fun ...

Legal or Not?

I ran into this post on reddit today and cannot believe this is legal. https://www.reddit.com/r/coins/comments/rjyxgp/the_first_of_our_1884cc_morgan_dollar_restrikes/ There are some guys making "tokens" from cancelled 1884-CC dies, and ANACS is grading them as tokens. Surely this isn't legal? They a...
