Re: DARKSIDE 1923 CHIN BAR VAM 1F

Easily seen outstanding 1923 Chin Bar $ VAM 1F.

OT - I picked up a circ. 1959 Franklin Half $ with a prominent die break at throat several years before this variety was listed as FS -402 "Goiter Variety" in the CHERRYPICKERS' GUIDE.

Re: 1889 O with Rotated Reverse, Guess the grade!

It appears to me the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions are not good to use in "referencing" rotation as they can be CCW or CW 90 degrees from the top or bottom, depending on which reference point is used. If the coin in the posting is 45 degrees CW as stated, is the tail of the eagle the reference ...

Re: 1889 O with Rotated Reverse, Guess the grade!

I tend to pick up rotated reverses when I find them. CW vs CCW has confuzzled me. If you flip them over top to bottom, just use the clock to determine CW or CCW? 3 o'clock would be 90 degrees CW? 9 o'clock would be 90 degrees CCW? The coin shown would be about 45 degrees CW. Rotations are calculate...

Re: 1922D 10a

Very nice photos and find on the 1922 D VAM 10A with unusual parallel reverse heavy die cracks which are bisected by radial die break. This variety has a lot going on with obverse displaced field break above IN and doubled tiara rays.. Previously, VAM 2K2 was a duplicate VAM listing that I recognize...

Reference to a striking error as a result of striking through debris. Often abbreviated as "struck thru".

Re: 1923-S Super collar

If the reeding is otherwise normal (coin struck fully in collar) and there's additional reeding on the rim, it would be a collar clash, where the hammer die hit the collar die before striking this coin. It should be noted that initially, the collar clash is caused by vertical/horizontal misalignmen...

WTG that is a nice 1924-P VAM 1AH1 .. No die break at in AMERICA .
Die break OF is present as seen with radial die crack from rim thru F in OF down to eagle's head with slight displaced field at F (VAM 1AH2). There is no mention of die break in AMERICA.

Re: 1924P 1AH1

Thanks for posting this interesting pitted die variety with great pics. Looks like VAM 1AH2 to me.

I finally found a 1922 VAM 5C Rusted Face which graded out ANACS MS 63 several years ago. The raised dots and splotches with "orange peel" effect in front of the neck are remarkable.

Re: 1923-P VAM Question

Nice find on the 1923 VAM 1AC2. Any variety with a nickname is special as in this case "Whisker Chin". Twin clash spikes off the eagle's shoulder, intersecting die cracks forming an X below eagle's talon, and line through D are interesting die markers. Recently, my 1923 VAM 1AC2 specimen received an...

Thanks for offering that die attribution guide on the die sequences of 1889 P VAM 23. It reflects your in depth die study on this great VAM 23 series. Cherrypicking that 1889 P VAM 23 A out of a bowl of loose Morgan Dollars must have been absolutely epic! Now, vammers enjoy updated die sequences on ...

Nice retained cud 1923 D Peace $. I was quite surprised to find a 1923 D VAM 1W Peace Dollar specimen in a very small assortment of silver dollars owned by my uncle 23 years ago. This same 1923 D $ now resides in an ANACS MS 60 holder. I remember showing it to Ash at a local Raleigh Coin Show about ...

Description was too short when no mention of the strong doubling inside top of D (GOD) was made. I remember how impressive this doubled D looked on my first well circulated 1934 D VAM 3 cherry picked specimen.

Clashed die sequence is very difficult to interpret and follow with a limited number of specimen. Your dedication on research in this field is exemplary. Thank You Wayne for all of the contributions that you provide on VAMWorld!

Re: 1891-O E clash; follow-up information

It is ironic how clashed die mishaps during the minting of coins has evolved into highly desirable collectible variety coins today.

Thanks for the historic documentation regarding the criticism of clashed die events at the mint.
