why is it called "Doubled Dash"?

This has been a mystery to me for years – Does anyone know why the 1885-CC VAM 4 is called "Doubled Dash"?
Ever since the first time I saw one, I have thought the lump under the second 8 in the date is clearly a broken-away chunk from the die.

Profoundly stupid attribution oops

I recently saw these two coins for sale and was stunned that so obvious a VAM could be SO misattributed. (Notice the identical coin numbers 133917.)

Re: To Dip a Cherry or Not To Dip a Cherry, that is the question...

Nice VAM for sure, but does not appear to be problem free. I agree, especially the obverse, which looks at least wiped to me. And I also agree with Chris that the toning looks artificial. But the bottom line is, the odds are excellent that it's going to be either: A. A problem coin with poor eye ap...

Re: Last Acquisition for 2018

This is my last purchase, a cherrypicked 1885-CC VAM 4 in an old green 7-digit PCGS holder. Semi-PL, dazzling lustre, and original as can be. Care to guess the grade?

Re: 1886 PCGS MS62 VAM-20

A truly tough VAM in my opinion, and one of my favorites. But prices have been coming down hard lately. That August 2017 MS63 sale is especially depressing. Check out the date column in these sales: 1886- 20 64 PCGS Aug-09 H $6,325 1886- 20 64 PCGS May-13 TT $5,523 1886- 20 64 PCGS Sep-13 H $3,819 1...

odd polishing (?) on 1881-O

Hi everyone!
Here's a photo of an 1881-O in PCGS DMPL that a friend is looking at buying. He asked what the vertical stuff is on the left side of the coin. I'm not sure what it is. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Re: Pre-FUN VAM Sale

Received the 1878 VAM 169 a couple of days ago John, just in time to give myself as a stocking-stuffer I love it! Super original and totally problem-free. Circ. coins don't come like this nearly often enough!

Re: Indicating PL rarity

John: My first reaction was to say that a 1-10 scale would be more quickly grasped by the most people. But my second reaction was that a lot of people who "aren't from around here" would equate the 1-10 scale with desirability/rarity – which is inevitably suggesting value. And then there's the under...

John, am I correct that the total PL/DMPL pop of 1900-O/CC is zero?

Re: 2019 VSS/PCGS Bulk Submission #1

1901-P VAM 3 is a longtime known VAM for PCGS. An XF45 is three or more times the $300 value limit for bulk, and PCGS knows it.

Re: 1921-P V19A

Thanks for the photo. Your 19A looks to be a slightly earlier die state than mine, judging from the boldness of the crack on the right side of the M. I also have an EDS VAM 19A that doesn't have a crack at all on the right side of the M, but everything else is there.

Re: 3 great cracks, but no scribbles

One more crack, but what is really interesting is the elegant downward-swooping polishing line (??) that connects D and O in DOLLAR. There are also several other old cracks in UNITED and DOLLAR.

3 great cracks, but no scribbles

It's amazing that this 1921-P apparently hasn't found a VAM number yet, even with little or no scribbles. D2 reverse. No doubling on obverse stars. The cracks from the wing to God (one from the wing to Go, and the other from the tip of the d to ES) are impressive: 81861006 crack God.jpg 81861006 cra...

Well, I can't update it because I don't know how and I'm very concerned about screwing up things if I try. :ugeek:

Re: This mzy be a new 1921-P

Thank you Lee! I agree 100% with VAM 1AH. I'd stopped looking at their book, thinking we had evolved past it with all the new content that has gone into the pages here. Maybe that'll teach me!

There are no photos on the 1AH page.
But your photos seem to be a good match in LVA/Crae's book.

D1 reverse, which increases the chance it's a new one.
No cracks on either side.
Doubled left stars.
Good scribbles, but they don't seem to be in our scribbles guide here.:
