Re: 1900-S VAM-3

There were only a few VAMs I still look for. Top of the list is 1900-S VAM-3A. I believe it is a listing error for a few reasons, but figure the imaged mint mark coin remains in the wild almost certainly raw. Additionally, just finding a VAM-3 has been a tall task. I have sought them for decades. ....

New 92-S Top 100

I had a new 92-S variety cross my desk. Obverse is like VAM 7, with the repunched date mostly polished away, but reverse is different. This is now listed as VAM 14 and counts as a slot in the Top 100. Alan had observed this die pair during his photo die study but the coin hadn't been seen in hand un...

Re: OT; Thanksgiving Break

I did some research in the Heritage archives: BB-168 (R4). Finest known examples are two AU50s. Here's the writeup from a 2005 Heritage auction for a PCGS-25 example, when the rating was R5: "This is a rare die variety and is in demand by specialists both for its rarity and for the horizontal die b...

Re: New Discovery

For some unknown reason my computer can't find my scanner and I can't find the disc to re-install, so can't post the letter or plate photos. But also the guidelines stated, "Coins that are found to be new varieties will be added to the Catalog without further action by the submitter". I thought thi...

Re: Impact of Rim Ding on grading

Both the rim ding and the environmental damage from the fingerprint would prevent a straight grade.

Re: Cool Peace $ CUD

If only there was something like an annual short list for stuff like this... You mean like something between 10 and 15 VAMs that are cool and/or scarce that would be fun to spend the next year looking for? Sort of like a year-long scavenger hunt? Yeah, someone should do that. We could even use the ...

I had to read the description of 8.3 vs. 8.0 a couple times.... very minor vs. minor ???? Really?? Sounds almost impossible to break that down.
How about the differences between AU50 and AU53? That's what those are.

Re: NGCX

NGC's new 100 point grading scale (10 plus one decimal place) that supplements the 70 point scale and will be used on moderns at first. It's an attempt to make graded coins approachable by those that grade other collectibles graded on a scale of 1-10. To me, it's an attempt to get more grading fees,...

Holy crap! I'll repost the list on the PCGS forum. This stuff gets posted there now and then. Were they stolen from the mail or your car? Hope you get it all back.

Re: 1901 O BOLD letter doubling on V 1A / 20

Refer to the VAM book and you'll see that VAM 20 came before VAM 1A. You'll also see unmistakable doubling on the lower edge of the 0 as well as the picture of the line in the ear. The repunched 0 fades away in later die stages. Send me a pile of all the different die stages and I'll fix the listing.

Both t transfers cannot have happened during a single clash event.
It doesn’t matter how rare a single t may or may not be.
Correct, but two clashes can happen without a coin being struck between them.

Read closely. I need to see a VAM 20, too.

Re: 1901 O BOLD letter doubling on V 1A / 20

If I were to see a VAM 20 without the clash and one of the clashed coins in hand (preferably MDS), I would likely call them VAM 20, 20A, 20B, and 20C. It looks like the the different clashes on the stage of 1A are each listable on their own.

Re: VAM Help 1900 - S

Glad you started with the date and mint mark. Reverse hub type is also important for the later dates. Take a look at VAM 18. It has the same very near date, mint mark position, and C4 reverse. Also, the die crack you mentioned is present. VAM 18A shows what this crack eventually grows to be.

Re: Interesting CC with pictures

The United States of America does not have any doubling is in about 60% of the reverse the obverse has no signs of it whatsoever if that matters. I'm still learning myself and I appreciate the insight. In my mind it's seems to be a special coin. The reason is that it is not everywhere. I've seen ex...

Re: Interesting CC with pictures

Machine doubling is fairly common, and on some dates is very common. One of the signs you have machine doubling is when the mint mark matches the rest of the design. The manuscript linked in the first post in the pinned thread I mentioned discusses this.

Re: Interesting CC with pictures

Welcome to the forum! You have fairly strong machine doubling on the coin pictured, not a doubled die. Take a look at the pinned post at the top of the forum about doubled dies.

Re: OLD R & I Ratings Discontinued

Hi JB, I’m not sure I’m tracking, will the greysheet be doing something w vams soon? Been away for years, not up with recent developments 😂😅 Yes. They'll have a quarterly price guide for VAMs that tracks the SSDC price guide. This is one of the reasons that if there's something amiss with the prici...
