That's one VAM that is in a set all its own. THE top VAM imho. Congrats!

Re: 1921 D 1N3 EDS MDS LDS OR VLDS

Would there be a displaced field break on the obverse under the date numbers 21?

Great Story that will always live in VAM history.
Here is what is written in the VAMview #1 page 6 & 7

Very Nice!
Have you VAMmed it yet?
Do I see slight 5-10 degree die rotation or am I just not looking at it correctly?

Re: My First Try at Conservation

Thanks for sharing Kurt. I am also not trying to get higher grades (but if that happens, great!) I am looking at the eye appeal as well. Looks like you had some amazing results. Vamhelsing, I only get my coins graded about once a year but will let you know when that time comes what grades came out o...

OT: Origin of the $ sign

Find your favorite cold beverage & sit down and learn a little history on the $ sign.
I found this video of a lecture given in 1991 by Eric Newman.

Re: My First Try at Conservation

Here is my second attempt at conserving a 1888-O VAM 4 Hot Lips. It is very hard to find in XF 45 and above grade without paying much moolaa for it. I did not pay very much for this one, so I took a shot at it. I was hoping for a little more detail under that dirt but to me it looks like it may have...

Re: O/T Spanish Colonial Die Break

Awesome looking 8 reales with that nasty die break. WOW!
Some historians believe the ribbons wrapping the pillars on the 8 reales is where the dollar sign $ comes from.

Re: 1900P new variety

I don't know about the VAM, but in order to keep your pictures upright, you have to edit them. It is because the pic is not square but more like a rectangle from using your phone. If you download them in your computer, you then can use a photo edit program and crop them to be more square. Save them ...

Very Nice Dennis.
One of my favorites in the broken mintmark set that is hard for me to afford as of late. Maybe one day I will get there.

Re: My First Try at Conservation

Thanks for all the responses and information on conserving. I have a PCGS AU 53 1891-O VAM 14A to compare to. The one in the pic above is very close in detail to the AU 53 in the PCGS holder. I am thinking AU 50 imo. or EX 45 as the lowest. As for getting a details or not, I am 50/50 on it. I have h...

My First Try at Conservation

I have never tried conserving or cleaning before but since I have had these dirty Morgans laying around raw for awhile, I decided to try it out using MS70 cleaner. My first try is with a dirty 1891-O VAM 14a (I cherried long ago) that has much of its details left on both obverse and reverse. In one ...

Re: 1901 Proof Vam 4

At ANACS there are total of 64 graded 1901 proofs with MS64 being the highest.
There are only 3 1901 proof VAM 4's with MS 62 grade and being the highest graded.

1992 Video of George Mallis at ANA

Ran across this 1992 video of George Mallis discussing Morgan Dollar history and VAM varieties. It is about 50 minutes long and is worth every minute to watch. If new VAMmers don't know already, George Mallis put the "M" in VA"M" literally.
Enjoy!

Re: It's Finally In-Hand... Is It a New E Discovery?... Muahaha...

Most of us on this thread have all been there. It looks like there could be an "E" but man! it ain't there. It's called a phantom "E" because your mind wants it to be there. You are just in the stages of becoming a better VAMmer. I have a few phantom "E's" myself.

I totally understand trying for this one.
I have only one question.
Does it have the obverse clash above the cap?
