Re: does the 1878-P VAM-42 7/7 Tail feathers have a damaged 4th star?

It's a VAM 42A. The stuff around the olive leaves is diagnostic for the reverse and that center stem is detached. That inner ear fill comes to a shortened point like most II/I obverse dies. There's a piece of a diagonal line visible in the lower loop of the first 8. The VAM 42A (there really isn't a...

That's why I get paid. There's a teachable moment here that would help just about any newer VAM collector.
There are other features on this obverse that illustrate it is a II/I die rather than a product of that II hub with the broken star

Maybe take a closer look at the lower loop of the 1st 8. There's a definitive answer there.

Nice brochure from the 1st sale. None of them are common, but the 3rd, 4th and 6th sales brochures are now rare.

Re: 1884 0 / cc

VAM 10 and fairly common. I'd say the Breen letter with the lot is worth more than the coin itself. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1884-O-CC-Morgan-Silver-Dollar-ANACS-MS-60-63-Crazy-documentation-RARE-/174355199098?hash=item289861347a%3Ag%3AUMcAAOSwi29fFOko&nma=true&si=QJiUHrnJhMjTDV0FzJbESLzWOgg%253D&or...

Re: 1878-CC VAM-15 with Quadrupled eyelid?

That is indeed a VAM 15. The odd feature you've noted along the eye's front edge is on all examples. It does give the appearance of 'shallow spikes' as seen on some of the 78 Philly and SF issues, but I believe in this case, the 'spikes' are part of the same mottled texture found along the entire pr...

Re: 1883-O Right Wing Tips: Strike vs. Polish vs. FFG (VAM-4)

I'd think this is likely another example of something I've heard called the 'signature principle'. Loosely stated. the same person doing the same work with the same tools and materials will naturally produce very similar results. The name behind this pair of hands may be lost to history, but you're ...

I've had a cheapo book stuck in transit in Mississippi for over a month now. No sign of movement in their tracking.

It's like there's a deliberate effort to break the post office

If we ever get back to the major show circuit in any semblance of normalcy, stop by Paul Cunningham's table. He wrote 'the book' on Lincoln material and my have one or two of these in one of his cases at any given time.
