Occluded gas bubble. Some are natural, but the most common cause is fire. Coin looks genuine

Can't imagine any real world scenario that constitutes a National Archives research emergency. A low to moderate risk of death or the spread of serious illness seems like a solid reason to wait.

Think we're off in the weeds here. The coin in the original post most likely has nothing more than some lumps of glue or wax on the surface. Hence, the 'poke it with a stick' comment.

A 'belly button' is not tied to any variety. It is not something in the die itself. It is a striking error. I believe the prevailing theory now is the dies were set slightly too far apart. There are other configurations of this phenomenon in other series, like the weird hourglass shape you occasiona...

Medium CC with Tail Hub 1 - open bud with the mintmark set that high leaves only two possible years, 1875 and 76. The variety that JB mentioned has this mintmark size and placement.
