Re: 1874 Morgan medal

Yeah, the relief on the portrait of the future King Edward VII is so high that it was hard to get a shot of the reverse. Not only wouldn't it lay flat, it would rock at the slightest touch - like pushing the button to snap the picture. JB you were showing off your Medal of Morgan in Baltimore a few ...

Re: 78-CC VAM-13 Question

Still kinda rare as a mint state coin, but yeah more have come to light over last few years. I guess the verbiage should be something like 'somewhat rare' in MS

1874 Morgan medal

I picked this up at the ANA in Philly. It's a British medal engraved by George Morgan shortly before he emigrated to the United States. I had fun showing it around the show and am still pretty jazzed about my purchase

Re: PCGS just graded an 1878-S VAM 58 SP65!

We've run off into the weeds here. There are no branch mint shenanigans from the Philly mint as being tossed around here and elsewhere. Collectors at the time did not care. Collecting by mint didn't really gain any following until the Heaton work in the 1890's. Why go thru all this trouble for somet...

Re: A nice gift!.. 1st edition?

Pretty sure the fake leather plastic cover job you have is a first edition. I have a copy of the larger format hardbound 'Top 100' and it states it is a second edition limited to 100 copies. There are pictures of Fey and Oxman signing stacks of 1st editions the day before they were released and they...

Re: 1900 P Adjustment Strike?

Yeah, I agree with Brian, the reeding is the best indicator. But having full denticles is an additional piece of evidence. Think this is the result of a bunch of grease and crud on dies from a normally weakly struck date

Re: 1900 P Adjustment Strike?

Full denticles and at least average reeding, so I'd say no to a die adjustment strike.

Re: Back from NGC

So the unknowns are
VAM 7
VAM 19A
VAM 19B
VAM 24 ( the one piece graded by NGC in hard pack is a 24A)
VAM 28

yeah, easy stuff to begin with....

Re: Neat 79p Error... S/T?

The 79 proof has the 78 VAM 215 reverse - a C2 hub die. This was also used for all of the 1880 proofs.
