Re: 1900 O/CC Speculation

If die records for the Engraving Department existed, it might be possible to match left-over CC dies to those sent to New Orleans - every die was tracked even when it was renumbered. But those records seem to be missing. We have to work with what is available, and do what is possible to gradually i...

Re: Possible Origin of the Wide Reed 1921's... The 1921-P Morgan Silver.... Peso?

Machines noticing 1/10 of 1 millimeter in difference: I'm assuming normal circulation can account for more than 0.003" of metal loss on a coin. I highly doubt it would trip any alarms... Even in modern machines...

Re: Possible Origin of the Wide Reed 1921's... The 1921-P Morgan Silver.... Peso?

Regarding: Size: would 1/10 of a millimeter be noticeable by machines of the era? Or by humans at that? Absolutely. Further, 38mm diameter silver dollars would be illegal - and not a legal tender. Ray Baker and the whole crew would have been fired and their bonds forfeit for defalcation. Remember -...

Re: 1900 O/CC Speculation

Collectors should not confuse "hundreds of old Carson Mint dies discovered" with poor accounting of the dies. The Engraver at Philadelphia kept a master inventory of every die. That a few hundred were defaced and not shipped back to Philadelphia (why waste the money?) does not affect the situation....

Re: Possible Origin of the Wide Reed 1921's... The 1921-P Morgan Silver.... Peso?

Interesting conjecture. How would the Philadelphia Mint explain that it was suddenly striking standard silver dollars that were not really "standard?" Undersized dollars would not fit correctly in mechanical counting machines and cash-dispensing machines, or even on the wooden counting boards still...

Possible Origin of the Wide Reed 1921's... The 1921-P Morgan Silver.... Peso?

It's fairly obligatory that I make an ass out of myself at least once every 3 months with a hair-brained theory, lol... So here's my end of Q1 conundrum... -- -- Here is my original research/ramblings in pdf format: QuickMemo+_200218_105046.pdf It is originally hosted off-site and is not the work or...

What year are you looking at?
Trying to see what kind of records Philly kept between 1900-1904 for usage/inventory/shipping.

I'm working on typing up a pdf with all the info on what my hypothesis is... I'll post it up here later today.

Re: 1900 O/CC Speculation

In 1900 the New Orleans Mint experienced many problems with dies. There was a standing monthly order of 10 Silver Dollar die pair. In at least one instance they had to order an additional 5 die par. Most of the problem's with the dies can be attributed to the improper hardening of the dies and plan...

Re: Die Studies

I have a continuum of a rant about doing die studies. Here is a conundrum for you to think about. The series has a listed mintage of 657K coins. But there are 16 base VAMs listed. This would make an average of 41K average coins per die minted if every listed VAM had a different obverse and reverse ...

Hehe, hey Alan, I think you and I debated this a few times... until my brain caught up with the idea that you are studying dies, not VAMs (hint, hint).
Would it be safe to say "One and done for the die and two and through for the VAM"?
Yes. 100% exactly.

Re: Die Studies

I'm out. There is a saying in St. Louis, "YCFS". Calling someone stupid instead of trying to understand where they are coming from isn't fruitful to anyone. Let me try to simplify my stance on all of this. VAMing isnt die identification. It's a game. If LVA cared about individually identifying ever...

Re: Die Studies

Again, the point is seemingly being missed. If a One & Done die marker or two are identified for each distinct obverse and reverse die, then you might understand how the One & Done actually works. It works irrespective of die marriage. I agree with you LDMG... That works for individual die identifi...

If you look at the Reverse die, where would the 'O' come from?...
I believe he's thinking dropped element, not clash Kenny..
Dropped element would be on the surface of the coin and obfuscate the letters in LIBERTY, and not rest behind it, no?

Re: Die Studies

Folks reject One & Done markers. I have never understood why  Every time I suggest it I get a myriad of reasons why it won't work. But it does work actually. My feeling: One and Done works great for ID'ing in some cases. Not for studying. Lots of single photo listings show only a single pup o...

Not sure how sought after that VAM is, as I see them while browsing occasionally, but damn that's a nice grade/example :)
