I'll add the 8TF letter to my presentation correcting the mintage. Of course my estimate of 1,280,000 is just as high as the 750,000 Red Book estimate is low compared with the mint's retrospective estimate.
Sounds good.

Re: Interesting Information

I am going by memory but I think it was 12000 business strikes and 880 proofs. And the entire lot of business strikes were melted leaving only the proof coinage. I know this has been wishfully disputed but the entirety of the remaining coons appears to be from 4 pairs of dies. JR might be able to a...

Re: Interesting Information

Interesting post Wayne. How does the number compare to the Redbook stated mintage for 1895 $'s? The Redbook states the mintage at 880 proofs. No mention of the 12,000 business strikes. This letter(and there are others) proves without a doubt there were 12,000 business strikes and still around in 19...

Interesting Information

Ran across a couple of very interesting letters from the Director of The Mint while working on my 1900-S die study. One letter deals with mintage of the 1878 8TF Morgan Dollar and the other deals with the mintage of the 1894-S dime and 1895-P Morgan Dollar. Note mintage figures. (Click image to view...
