Re: 1902-O Is this 3 Olives???

That's considered one of the 2-olive reverses (C4/C3 hub -- technically a Class III doubled die). That, the date position, the mint mark position, and whether or not Liberty's profile is doubled will go far in attributing this one.

... On the 1881-O VAM-78 may be VAM-72, but that’s not for me to decided.
I had changed my mind. Check VAM 64.

Re: I need help with my 1881 O

Thank you John, I had looked at the vam 2 page and everything matched, on the obv, down to the die cracks, along the stars and the clash on the neck, but it had no picture or the clash locations of the reverse. like Russ had said, mine has a 'bearded' eagle clash and that is what I was trying to ma...

Re: I need help with my 1881 O

Start with the mint mark. It's the only thing that moves around from die to die. You have an O/O tilted to the left. The wiki search will make very short work of this. Search for "1881-O" "O/O" tilted left (include the quotes when you search for special characters like the - and /), and it'll take y...

Re: Leroy's Reply Dec. 2019

And check 81-O VAM 78 against VAM 72. No pictures on the page, but there is one of the wing-neck gap on the VAM 20 page. I have some pictures of VAM 72 somewhere, but won't be able to get to them until tonight at the earliest. The description of the obverse sounds like what you show. Edit: Strike th...

Re: 1900-S Die Study Update

The 1900-S Life of Dies table is a good start. We know that these dies were shipped in small lots (such as #1-5, etc.) and it would make sense from an operational perspective to list them on the table in order of use. As can be readily seen, there are probably many more die pairings than numeric "p...

Awesome addition to a Morgan collection, I might add. And if there's a poster child for when the VAM catalog just isn't enough, it's @fogie.

Re: New 1878-S VAM??

Whats the best way to verify this coin variety? Start with a clear picture of each side, and we'll ask for what we need to continue Also saw a post about a bulk submission? Anyone have info about how that goes down and if its too late to join in? Ive got a few coins and if this one is a variety I w...

Re: 1900-S Die Study Update

Obverse die 21 -- that's a lot of coins! Are you assuming that dies numbered 1-23 are C3, 116-125 C4/C3, and 154-162 C4? The vast majority of reverse dies for varieties observed are C3. It could be that most of what was melted in C4/C3 or C4, but we'll never know. An exercise for those of you who li...

Jb- could you explain your comment about a high grade 1896o host coin?
18 years may be a little long for an 1896 silver coin released into circulation to still have sufficient detail to make a decent looking fake. It's not impossible, however.

Re: Privately Made Question

Greetings all. I recently read a theory that the linked group counterfeit coins were made at an official but not currently working northern Mexico Mint during the Mexican Revolution of 1914-15. The coins may then have been used to buy arms and ammunition. Chihuahua was suggested as one possible min...
