The language isn't consistently used, and I'd prefer to have an accurate term established rather than have an incorrect, but popular one metastasize.
What term would you propose? I'm all for establishing a universally accepted term that accurately describes these...

Re: First buffed reverse?

While these are cool, keep in mind that the term "buffed dies" is not correct. These are failed dies, with the die collapsing or sinking during striking. The 83-O VAM 1C shows how the die deteriorates in this respect over time. Log books from the mint for 1881-O show a die being retired because it ...

Re: First buffed reverse?

I don't know when the pitting occurred below the tail feathers, Vince. I have a 1C2 that is a slightly later die state than Andy's example and I think it does not have the patch. I'm not a 100% certain however so I'll need to check this evening... All I have available at the moment is the crop of th...

Re: First buffed reverse?

Nice examples Andy. Your 1C2 is on the cusp of what I consider LDS with the ripple in the field at the eagle's right wing tip. I'm still looking for that 1C3 holy grail....

Re: First buffed reverse?

Welcome to my addiction... I joined VAMworld-01 in 2012 and it just so happened there was a discussion about the '83-O 1C at that very time. It was a life (collecting) changing moment for me. I managed to find a raw LDS 1C2 shortly there-after and continued to search for this holy grail. Along the w...

Yes, really nice one Bert! 8-)

I have a couple of buffers that aren't 1C's but not this one. I'll have to start looking... ;)

Re: The Next Big Thing/Event Etc ??????????????

My personal opinion is VAMmers should be(come) members of other numismatic sites and drop V-bombs with links at every available opportunity while promoting membership to Vworld2 and the SSDC. ;)

Re: 1883 O VAM 1C1 or 1C2?

I think that 1C reverse die was so soft it didn't have any real affect on the obverse dies.

I was going through my images and found this one. The earliest die state example I own. (at the moment)

Re: 1883 O VAM 1C1 or 1C2?

Well, I always thought a 1C2 should have existed single clashed but have never seen one in the 7 years I've been looking. That 1C2 pairing clash must have happened early in that run. I agree the 1C stages are a cool set. I'll have to pull out my 1J and have a closer look... Anyone have any idea why ...

Re: 1883 O VAM 1C1 or 1C2?

Thanks Ray, that's where I'm at. When the M shows up it is distorted, but fairly obvious. I was thinking the second clash may have retired the first obverse, but I have a 63PL single clasher with the second obverse. A single clasher with the 2nd obverse in PL is a rare one. I would love to see imag...

Great photos Ray. I'm guessing the 1J and 16 pairings came before 1C1/1C2.

Still looking for that 1C3 though.
You and me both brother.... ;)

I have an LDS 1C2 where the bulges appear around the wing tip and a couple of PL 1C1's but that DMPL EDS 1C1 and 1C4 (yes 1C4)still elude me....
