Re: And another marking request on a 1921

Hi Kcf9572 - welcome! The cracks aren't damage to the coin itself, it is damage within the dies that struck the coin, transferred to the coin itself. So the cracks don't really affect the grade. Some folks like the distinctive look of the cracks, and seek them out, so they can be a plus.

Re: 1921-P D1 reverse help needed

I can't place that example, Dennis. Interesting polishing lines!

Sure doesn't look like the photos on the VAM 1BF1 page. LVA's plate photo shows a break to the L in DOLLAR, and it doesn't seem that this example has that but has other breaks elsewhere.

Yes, they certainly do appear to be the same.

My VAM 65 is attributed by VSS
My VAM 87 was attributed by LVA

Everything I notice on one coin... is on the other.

Great catch!

Re: Are Morgan 1921-P VAM-65 and VAM-87...

They do look similar, don't they?
And the full-coin picture on the VAM 87 page shows bevelling similar to that shown on the VAM 65 page.

Hopefully Dennis or the like can provide a differentiation; if not, it may indeed be a redundant listing.

Again the die could be worn.
The 85-O dies don't tend to wear down - it's much more likely to be a weak strike that causes that sort of flatness.
From the pixelated pictures it's hard to tell, but I'd think a grader would call that coin VAM 5 AU details cleaned.

@weth would you like any of these pics on the page? Or just a link to this thread? The current pics are meh. Yoir call though since you're doing the 85o thang ;)
Those are decent photos, Chris! I think every little bit helps. The photo at the neckline showing the die lines is a good PUP.

Re: 85o w/ heavily pitted eagles left wing + neck...

It is indeed VAM 1A "Rusted Wing" Check 25. I've seen that wing gap... Several of the 85-O reverse dies have significant schmutz in the wing gap like that, so it's a difficult PUP unless you have a really clear image to compare to an example. For me, the lines at the neckline and in the hair are mor...

That's a helpful series of photos, Dennis!

(and I hope no one pursues a 14.14A listing just to further confound things...)

I would need to check to be sure, but I think that's VAM 1A.

Re: Back from Leroy 4 NEW 1878 Varieties W/ 2 new 8 TF

I remain doubly amazed by the 78P VAM 82A. First, that LVA thought the features were in the die and not PMD. Secondly, that he would call such a thing a "cud". There are no features lost, so it would be some form of displaced field if it were in the die, not a cud. But it's pretty clearly post-mint ...

Re: Back from Leroy 4 NEW 1878 Varieties W/ 2 new 8 TF

Edit: Or what about struck through the edge of a thin soft cloth or a sheet of paper or something? Would that might leave a perfectly straight line, not allow flow lines to form, but still allow the details to be transfered from the die to the coin through the cloth/paper? That was my first thought...

Re: Does 1921-P VAM-84 =

I have an unattributed PCGS64 example. It does appear to match the photos on the VAM 115 page. I can get it attributed with VSS, as I think that might help the case with LVA. Although JB could be ornery and label it a VAM 115... So I'd be glad to help, but I got my example from Dennis, so he probabl...

Re: Back from LVA

Two things that LVA clearly hates - dark toning and strong machine doubling! I still haven't "finished" my 1883P die study as I have a toned / machine-doubled example I sent him a couple years ago that he thought might be listable but said he needs to see an untoned / no machine doubling example in ...

Re: Sorry, guys, there's another 1921P

Is there a secondary pickup that's more distinctive than what LVA chose to photograph? Not too much, Dennis. This particular example, although not particularly EDS, doesn't have any appreciable cracking. I'll have JB take some photos when I eventually send it in to VSS for that coveted little yello...

Congrats. Do you need help setting up the new page? I would appreciate it! I believe the contents / photos of the VAM 13A page can go directly to the VAM 18B page. The new plate photos can be added to the VAM 18A page. (It was a little odd that LVA didn't make any new plate photos at all for the 18...

Sorry, guys, there's another 1921P

Hi gang, I had sent a number of 1921P mystery examples to Dennis, who kindly helped me attribute most of them. Of the four that he couldn't attribute, he deemed one example worthy of a trip to LVA. I waited until after I got the supplement to see if it had been documented last year; it sort of looke...
