Re: Is this 1878 anything special?

Of course - every 1878 is special.

It's clearly got doubled tail feathers, so it's a 7/8. And that doubling of LIBERTY is pretty cool.

Take a look at VAM 38:

Re: Scribbles bits & pieces

Hey Dennis,

It would be helpful to post at least one shot of the entire lower TF area, just to help place these detail photos in context.

New page added, revisions made and eliminations completed.
Thank you, but one adjustment to suggest. I see that 21P VAM 11 (eleven) has been marked as eliminated, when it should be VAM 1i (one eye) that is now eliminated and designated 1AE2. Thanks to anyone who can correct this!

Re: Is this an LDS 1921-P VAM 3FX?

I agree that it's a VAM 3FX. My example is a little bit more EDS without those interesting obverse breaks, but it matches the polishing line in front of the eye and by the E, and has the same break pattern at ES-O. Congrats on filling another slot in your set!

Re: Polish lines gone nuts (1921-P)

I think I got it!

I agree that the polishing is similar to 1AT. I also looked twice at VAMs 19 and 79 for similar reasons.

But the lines by the eagle neck, gouge at the talon, and across the wreath match my VAM 41A.
So I think that's a VAM 41 EDS...

Anyone recognize these 21P D2 breaks? (it's VAM 3CV!)

Hi gang, Took some pictures using a microscope at work - didn't see the "point" text in the lower left until later. Anyway... Saw this 1921P D2 with some interesting breaks. Can't match it to the break guide, or the scribbles guide. Break across the neck to the second star: break3.jpg Break coming o...

Re: 1885 O VAM 21 and odd large marking

It looks like a strike-through error. There was a fragment of something between the planchet and the die, which created the impression in the coin. I have the same thought, shouldn't PCGS have designated it as a strike thru though? I am not sure, but I believe you have to pay the $18 attribution fe...

Re: Back from LVA - a 21P kill, 21P reassign, and 83P revision

I would appreciate any help you might care to provide! Seems like the main things are:

Add photos and description change to the 1883P VAM 1G page.
Create 1921P VAM 1AE2 page and transfer VAM 1i content.
Transfer 1921P VAM 91 content to VAM 6 page.

Thanks!

Back from LVA - a 21P kill, 21P reassign, and 83P revision

Hi gang, I just got back a small parcel from Sydney Ohio, and am pretty pleased with the results. I had three issues to present and am grateful that LVA saw things the same way that I did: 1) I had submitted an 1883P variety to LVA in 2014, in both unclashed and single-clash stages. LVA didn’t see a...

Complete 1885-O set for sale

Hi gang, There are two complete 1885-O sets in the SSDC Registry; fogie has one, and I have the other. Would you like to have the third complete 1885-O set? I am offering up for sale a certified, attributed set of all 31 known 1885-O die varieties. It’s sort of odd that there isn’t more to the 1885-...

Re: 1921-P want list

1. So you're good with the VAM 116, then? 2. But I already sold you a VAM 6! VAM 116 (has there been a new discovery?) isn't listed in the set, so I didn't know to include it in my want list. VAM 6? Umm... I just checked my boxes for the third time, and I have no VAM 6. Hey Dennis, I posted about n...

Re: 1899P VAM2A..???????

What John said. It's clearly either a 99P VAM 2 or 2A. It's hard to tell from your photo whether the second 9 is polished or not. The 2A typically has a faint remainder of the clash visible at the neck.

Re: 1921-P VAM 26 vs 26A question

It's also for this reason that I'd prefer to use things like VEDS / EDS / MDS / LDS / VLDS sort of mutable distinctions for die state rather than letter suffixes, as the letters often don't accurately convey where that state is in the die progression. I agree! So with the VEDS et al. approach, is o...

Re: 1921-P VAM 26 vs 26A question

I think the issue is that LVA is usually only sent a single coin at a time. So if he sees only an example with no beveling, then an example with beveling in two locations, he can only make that binary distinction between those two states. That's why it always helps to send multiple examples across t...
