Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

To me, this is interesting. All I did was suggest that Loren check with Leroy. I generally have provided Leroy that courtesy in the past. I am amazed that this thread had dived into a legal discussion of copyright. Common courtesy was my intention, not necessarily a legal interpretation on my part. ...

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

It seems the legal advice being given on this site is unequivocal. So I stand corrected apparently.

Has anyone here or those offering legal advice seen Leroy's agreement with Collector's Universe?

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

Maybe I am missing the point, but I thought it was clear that only Leroy can answer that question. Not trying to be difficult, just if I was in your shoes, I would run it by him.

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

I am sure others can say the same thing. I knew the individual that owned the Impaled Eagle that won it off of EBay. He had a lot of official paperwork with it going way back, including paperwork from LVA when it resurfaced. It was all put into a nice collectible format. The coin in hand was awesome...

I try to keep my VAMming simple. Not sure why your approach seems so complicated, to me anyway.

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

You could always consult with a lawyer like Mitch did:) Might be less expensive to follow my advice.

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

Here is my opinion based on working with Leroy for over the past 11 years. 1. Anything you use that comes out of the Encyclopedia or Supplements needs his permission. 2. Ask Leroy via email or snail mail first if you can use his copyrighted material, i.e., die classifications. I would show him what ...

Re: 1896 o questions

If I owned that coin, I would put a VAM-3 sticker on it and move on.

But beware, multiple VAM-3 die pairs may exist.

Re: 1896 o questions

Keep in mind that my "die studies" are looking for different obverse and reverse dies, and not possible VAM matches for die pairs. But when I can match a die pair to a VAM listing, it is just an outcome of my studies. Also keep in mind that the VAM-3 photo on the VAM page may not be associated with ...

Thanks John. My work is so old now that I suspect a lot of folks don't know of my work on this series. I am always willing to try and help however.

Re: 1902 O Silver Dollar

I do not pay attention to filled G's or e's. These usually are progressive on dies meaning some coins will have them, and some do not. Everything on your coin says VAM-44.

But look for this PUP. It may be that your coin is LDS such that it doesn't show however.

Re: 1904 O Silver Dollar

The gouges in the denticles are too strong for this to be a LDS where somehow the date doubling disappeared, or close to it. The gouges actually do get weak with die wear. It still looks to me like your coins date digits got smashed.

Re: 1904 O Silver Dollar

You have a VAM-3. The reverse of the VAM-3 was not married to any other obverse die, so I suspected you had a VAM-3. The gouges in the denticles nail it. Your date got mushed somehow by PMD so you can't see the date doubling.

How about a shot of the denticles between S of PLURIBUS and the 1st U of UNUM, plus the inside of the ear.

Re: 1888-S Morgan Dollar Die Study

I am pulling together some info on the 88-S die study, and found a boo-boo in the die incest and die progression chart. The OD8 in the lower right hand box should have been OD11. The corrected version is below.

Yup, VAM-19. There is a polished LDS which is what your coin is. Thanks for the additional photos.

Another way to do this is by date placement. Look at the photos below and see which one your coin matches.

Re: 1901 Silver Dollar

Quite frankly I am not convinced you have a VAM-19. The photo of the E of LIBERTY you show kinda looks right, but I am not sure. The use of the VAM-3 obverse is the 2nd use of that die, so the gouge/scratch at the E would be weaker. The VAM-19 reverse die is the 2nd use, so the one & done PUPS for i...
