Kinda cool. It's an error of a lamination at the edge. It's not tied to a specific die pair, so it wouldn't have a VAM number for this feature.
Taking a little time and pinning down the difference between errors and varieties can save you a considerable amount of aggravation and time.

Re: Registering finds in the 'wild' versus bought attributed coins?
Here's one of the key pieces from my Top 100 set that was definitely purchased attributed and still sort of feels like a cherrypick.

Re: Registering finds in the 'wild' versus bought attributed coins?
Probably somewhere between a third and a half of what I hold in sets was 'in the wild'. That percentage goes way up for something like my 78-CC material. I haven't really tracked which was which, but some are obvious. If is attributed on the holder from another service, I bought it that way.

Re: A personal goal reached
I have several sets working. The next focus will likely be on the standard Top 50 Peace set.
I also just started a WOW! set. I'm already better than halfway done and in 7th. The last couple of pieces are real nut busters though

A personal goal reached
For several years, I've been working on actually completing a standard Top 100 set. It's a tall order to catch or pass any of the four sets ahead of me in the SSDC registry. However, the last piece I needed for a complete set just showed up. Some of the components are genuinely rare, while others ha...

Re: 1900 p.... VAM-Misstrike- Error- What is it?
I'm not buying this as a die stage based on the pictures. If I was to hazard a guess, I'd say there was residue built up around the stars and then the coin saw further circulation. Later the crud was removed. If it crossed my desk, I'd most likely tank it for environmental damage. I'd really have to...

Re: 1882 GSA Carson city grand snake history.
I have a copy of the Margolis booklet (1973) and the reverse is pictured several times. Pixelated, but there's enough there to conclude the coin was a VAM 3A. Hopefully it still resides in its GSA holder.

Trouble of my own ID'ing 78 Philly
In my defense it had been turned into a store card back in 1988. The 1878 date is clear and the 4th right star might be slightly broken. The nostril appears to be reasonably intact. The reverse has the B2 short nock and the r of trust is intact. The host coin seems like it was scrubbed before it was...

Re: OT question
Second piece looks like a legit doubled die. It's not the biggie, but still a nice find. I'll echo the Variety Vista recommendation

Re: OT - Trade Challenge
Thanks JR for the 2 cents on the counterfit. It really has been tooled hard & is really kinda cool. I am not sure if it is a 100% counterfit of if it just has been tooled so much it might as well be a counterfit. @vampicker It's old school. Saw a bunch like yours when I first started with the compa...

Re: Have you seen this major clash before?
The distinction between error and variety can be tricky with some pieces. This is particularly true when both are present.

Re: Have you seen this major clash before?
I'm guessing you're talking about the struck thru grease area on the neck itself. Unrelated to any sort of clashing and not part of any particular variety. A minor mint error that's a coincidence.

A couple of Morgan patterns sold by HA
Ended May 5th. Strong prices but the Judd 1553 lost a little since the last time it was auctioned https://coins.ha.com/itm/patterns/1877-50c-morgan-half-dollar-judd-1510-pollock-1674-high-r7-pr65-cameo-pcgs-cac/a/1344-3650.s?ic2=mytracked-lotspage-lotlinks-12202013&tab=MyTrackedLots-101116 https://c...
