Re: 1878-P 'broken N & M' obv die incest ordering?

The N and M feature is a hub break. 3 different obverse dies are involved. For one, Jeff Oxman's 7/8TF guide listed it as VAM 40, then 31 then 110. The second is VAM 145 then 162 if I remember correctly. I'd have to look at them side by side in hand to verify that however. VAM 200 was the only use o...

Re: Best resource for satin and matte low relief peace dollar proof diagnostics?

The coin was done by ANACS in November 1992 and there was a difference of opinion about the piece.

Re: Proof vs biz reeding

Looked at Dannreuther's book again and in part one there is a brief discussion about collars in the introductory text. He states it's an unreliable and potentially misleading diagnostic for proof vs business strike attributions on reeded edge coins. He likely didn't catalog the edges because he didn...

Re: Proof vs biz reeding

The next time I have a proof Morgan cross my desk, I'll try to remember to shoot a picture of the reeding. I will strongly caution you that the edge is unlikely to be a useful diagnostic unlike something like an Indian Head cent. As a comparison, I went thru my copy of John Dannreuther's epic book o...

Re: The 78 Acid Treated Funky Feather We All Ignore

Yeah, you'd think there had to be some effort to remove some of the underlying design or we'd see a lot more of it. If I recall correctly, the 'pitting' is on the earlier stage too. Whether or not it represents a deliberate act is an open question. It does appear to be oddly localized.

Re: The 78 Acid Treated Funky Feather We All Ignore

I have a 30A sitting on my desk right now. I don't think I'm on board with this being acid treated. There are a few different textures you see on the acid work. I compared the example of VAM 30A to the 78-S VAM 49 and 50 as well as an 82-S VAM 3. On the varieties we now recognize as acid treated, th...

Apparently I liked the piece better in hand when I saw it almost 14 years ago

The image on the Wexler site is more clear than the CPG pic

Re: What is this called?

Hard to tell in a slab, but if it is a tapered planchet, it would be a little light, Weigh it compared to a normal coin in the same slab

Pretty standard and you probably know him. Maybe you'll find it a few bucks cheaper, but... The red horizontal trays are listed as in stock

1885-S VAM 4A

This one appears to be fairly elusive. I don't clearly recall other examples but I had this on my desk today. Big chip in the left wreath and it seems like it's a different reverse than VAM 4 itself. Here's a few pictures. On the obverse, there's the strong repunching on the 18, faint lines in the D...

Re: long lost 79-S V41...

I called it 69. I guess Brian's response isn't clear to me. Two different obverses pictured. I'm not ready to tank the clear listing (69) in favor of the not-so-clear listing (41). I thought I had resolution, but it seems I may have just kicked old mud back into the water. If only there was an ongoi...

I have an example on my desk of the original piece posted. It matches the full coin shot of a piece attributed by Brian on the VAM 69 page.
