Re: OT - Dan Carr Set Almost Done

Carr makes some of his pieces look circulated. I have one of his Standing Liberty Quarter tokens in a VF30 holder. The apparent grade is consistent with what the actual would look like . If you wanted to make a technical argument, you could, but technical grading died back in the 80's

It's still listed in NGC's Variety Plus pages. Think they made this up themselves right after the Hit List 40 book came out

Re: NGC VAM price less than non VAM?? REALLY

It's a safe bet that the person that edits the standard Morgan prices will NEVER be the same person that edits the VAM pricing in any value guide except the guide Ash noted. In a fluid market it's not unusual for the 'normal' price to eclipse the estimated value of a particular VAM from the last tim...

Re: 1888 P Morgan with VAM-1B...and more?

I'll reiterate it's not VAM 1B. I don't see any clear evidence of letter transfer on your coin. Without something like that, it wouldn't be any of the listings noted for clashes. If all you have are typical clash marks , then it's time to move on to other stuff like the date position. It looks near ...

Re: Fresh Back From LVA on 1881-O VAM 1L

This is seriously aggravating. I tried to prove that this was a denticle clash and was shot down repeatedly. I didn’t believe the “occluded gas” theory but i gave up. The coin sat in my box of vams until a few months ago and it got sold. I remember looking at it one last time and feeling sad that I...

VAMs 15 and 49 have an 8 that looks like that. Don't see the break on the lower cap of VAM 15A/B, but there's similar clashing present.

Re: 1878, 8TF. Spiked EYE & LIP

It's hard to see in your pictures, but I'd bet there's a break on the O of OF. Forget about the clashmarks - there's no letter transfer during any stage of this marriage.

It's a die gouge. It shows more clearly on the date image on its respective VAM page

Re: Fun W/21 Help!

Some years ago, I published an article detailing the various marriages of the 89-CC. Two of them were not listed in The VAM book or its updates at the time. For a couple of years, they were known as Roberts-5 and Roberts-6 until Van Allen listed them as VAM 5 and 6. To this day, there are a few (les...

Yeah, the 'can't see the MPD' stage of this marriage used to be VAM 35. I swear stuff like this exists for the sole purpose of cooking our brains slowly.

Re: ANA find

It's unclear which variety was involved. The finer details are lost , but the date position matches VAMs 2 and 5. It is unclear if the reverse die was actually used for coininge.
