Maybe. Zero listed as PL in the SSDC registry

Re: 1886P Morgan Silver Dollar Vam 1C 3 over 3 or 3 over 4
It's 3 and 3. That center mark in the bottom cluster is a hit with some truly deceptive placement. Still, the 3 and 3 stage is a nice find

Re: What is the correct term?
If the obverse markers aren't a match, it CAN NOT be a VAM 23 - period. And you know this. But if you do find any other stages related to this progression, I'd be interested in seeing them. And you dodged the question yet again. Very different things happened with similar events throughout this leng...

Re: What is the correct term?
You have presented many facts. But when questioned about their relevance to the subject at hand, you repeat yourself and don't actually answer. I'd accuse you of circular argument, but that implies something more cohesive than anything you've presented. In all of this, I've asked repeatedly for an a...

Re: 1878CC Vam7a
Yeah, I used to think this was kind of rare, but it's not hard to find circulated examples. It turns out the pre-clash VAM 7 is much harder to find. But this is still fairly described as rare in mint state. 63 ties the top pop in the SSDC registry. I'd estimate it would bring at least $200 over comm...

Re: What is the correct term?
I call BS on that. Downing's letter is a solution for an unrelated die issue. Proper softening of planchets prior to striking is a remedy for premature die breakage. How would softer planchets in any way fix the oddity seen on the VAM 23A/B obverse? Nothing in your detailed progression explains the ...

Re: Possible new finds
The exercise I suggested may seem pointless, but it is worth doing. It makes the RPM's stick out more and helps sort some of the more deceptive forms of post mint damage from actual variety characteristics.

Re: Possible new finds
Maybe it would be a worthwhile exercise to look at other examples of this date and the year before and compare multiple mint marks to this coin. You might find they all exactly conform to the same style. There's a good book on Morgan and Peace Dollar varieties that shows all of the known mintmark st...

Re: What is the correct term?
Ok, I'll rethink the Barber letter. Seems like a detour off topic. How is a planchet issue in any way relevant to the 89 Philly issue under discussion?

Re: What is the correct term?
What the hell - you keep droning on about me calling 23B rare. I did not say that ever. "Scarce at best' is not rare. I did say the 23B is harder to find than the later stages of 7B. I'm sure some of your pieces in the more greatly detailed micro progression are harder to find than other but so what...

Re: New take on 1889 VAM 23A
Back to this thread and Barber's letter. He states the problem that occurs periodically at the branch mints isn't that there's something wrong with the die steel. It is caused by improper hardening of the dies. He goes on to say he won't try to remedy this by written instruction, thinking it better ...

Re: What is the correct term?
I've made my arguments and Wayne has misrepresented or ignored them repeatedly. I've repeatedly asked him for his explanation since he's never accepted mine even when the evidence presented supports it. I stand by my theory but would welcome further discussion from anyone else. It's clear you will n...

Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
I'd liken it to the difference between banging around in a cigar box as 'old stuff' vs being passed from hand to hand in commerce. Mar the surface enough and you really can't/shouldn't call it mint state

Re: What is the correct term?
The utter absurdity of all this meandering argument with no conclusion from you is that I did 'read' the dies and it was studying the VAM 7B that cemented the 'softer than normal' die theory. Massive clash after massive clash -and yes- note how little has changed on the reverse. That's the point. Th...
