Re: 1880-O VAM-22 eliminated

Got an example of VAM 22 on my desk, it is clearly not the same as VAM 18.

Got something pretty cool today

Stopped by the office of Kolbe & Fanning to pick up an old book I'd won and David Fanning had this letter and large prints from FX Klaes book set aside for me. Wasn't cheap, but happy to have these

Re: 1922 Peace Dollar Question

For clarity, typical clash marks ARE mentioned in the VAM book and on our Attribution 101 page on this site, they just don't warrant a separate listing. To me, there's nothing wrong with telling the budding variety enthusiast that the first thing they spot isn't particularly special. It's almost no ...

Re: OT Capped Bust Half Grading question

Agree with an AU reverse, but that doesn't help much with a grade. Playing with a picture, but I'm not picking up traces of obverse luster. I'd say XF 40 max. Looks fairly original too.

Re: 1921-S Vam 1B4C (new stage) Thorn or Thornhead (new variety)

To be clear, we're talking about two stages of the same reverse die, not two separate dies. The scribble scratches match across all stages. I checked this against an example of VAM 1B5 in hand and the earlier stage plates.

It a VAM 18. But you've come across one of the defining examples of an 'evil mimic'.

Re: New to VAM analytics...

A good place for anyone to start with Peace Dollar varieties is the http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/PEACE_VAM_Attribution_101 found on the home page. I'd suggest a long look at the clashed die section. Can't tell you how many newer collectors in this field get tripped up...

Re: Help with date placement

I for one appreciate seeing other methodologies even if I'd never use them myself. I prefer the simplicity of the DPIS, but I do most of those guesstimates in hand. I can see where 'Ghost' might have a useful digital overlay for auction photos. It is worth noting as has already been stated that seve...

1893-CC VAM 2 LDS

Had this come across my desk today. It's a later stage of the VAM 2 marriage that occurs after the VAM 2A stage. It is identical to the purported 'branch mint proofs' but there's no trace of mirrors. I've see other examples, but this one is 58ish and tells its story fairly well. It's a coin that pre...
