Re: 1883-CC mini die study (VAM 2 has VAM 3 LDS reverse)

Yeah, we're up to five listed stages for this marriage and there are other minor ones I'm aware of, Overall this marriage accounts for around half the total mintage. As you noted, VAM 2 is by far the most difficult to find. None of these, even with all the stages, is actually rare. The 78-CC set is ...

Matches what I've found exactly. The deeper dive is adding all the minor stages.

Re: 1878 VAM 70A - new stage listing

Couple things - I am not the discoverer, and I don't recall being involved in sending the coin in. The submitter does occasionally visit the site and may wish to take credit for the listing. At the moment, my customer has a right to privacy regarding their submission. There is a distinct possibility...

Re: 1878 VAM 70A - new stage listing

I looked at the VAM 70 page and we seem to have a couple of examples up that aren't as cracked as this. If this is the EDS, then they all qualify as 70A. Am I wrong?

1878 VAM 70A - new stage listing

I have the coin on my desk today. The LDS of VAM 70 got listed as 70A. The discovery piece is marginally PL.

We could use a new page set up.

Re: ANACS order status question

I think the surprise is because I was at the show where he submitted them and I'm just now getting them. Thing is everything goes to the office first for processing. I NEVER hand carry customer coins back from a show.

Re: PL 86p with neat rev. gouges... Leroy?

Bet there's a stage of that 32 obverse that doesn't have a doubled ear. Without it, VAM 1 kinda looks plausible

Re: PL 86p with neat rev. gouges... Leroy?

The thing above the wing looks too small to list, but might be a good secondary diagnostic. The other deal between the wreath and lettering is a lamination. You can see part of the outline almost reaches the star.
Got some bubbles showing, bet you can poke it with a stick and push it down

80-CC Rev of 78 without the overdate is actually a tougher coin

Re: Were silver dollars "as good as gold?"

I'd say under ordinary circumstances, yes, but it's not that clear cut. If you spent a 5 dollar gold piece, you'd almost certainly get some or all your change in silver. As the letter that prompted this thread mentions, there was a great deal of politics muddying up gold vs silver. It's interesting ...
