Taking A Break

I have had a medical setback or two and have decided to take a break from my work on the 1881-O. Hopefully I will be back at it by the end of the year, but health needs to take priority.

Thanks to all who have supported the work and I will be back when I can.

Re: Ebay separating from Paypal

I haven't noticed PayPal being out of the transaction. Maybe that is coming, but I bought a coin yesterday with PayPal on eBay.

I have noticed that if you buy bullion it is now a double authentication process, which probably should have been done years ago.

Maybe the ultimate scam would be a real Morgan on each end and Chinese fakes in the middle.

Re: Where were we in 1981

Well I was actually restricting my thoughts to coin collecting, but the stocks were definitely a good point. In 1981 I had not collected since about 1960, so I was down to one coin. It was a Buffalo Nickel I received for my tenth birthday. It was an MS coin but in a 2x2 cardboard holder. I am sure t...

Where were we in 1981

Wow, if I had just a spare $625,000 back in 1981

David M Bradford - 1st NO Mint Supervisor

This month I started a look into the Mint Supervisors with David M Bradford, Jr.

As is often the case lives are different and more complicated than his job at the Mint

There are a lot of twists and turns in his story and I hope this series will be interesting

Re: Monthly silver to gold ratio 1896 - 1924

Once the US value was stabilized at $35 per T oz fine, large amounts of gold flowed into the US. I am sure this is true, but the US became the storehouse for most of Europe as German intentions became more obvious. I have always our gold reserves grew more from physical removals from hostilities th...

Your chart did not go to the Roosevelt era, but when he devalued the dollar how did it play out with the gold/silver ratio?

Re: Monthly silver to gold ratio 1896 - 1924

PS - To my way of thinking, this also illustrates the difficulty in a monetary system based on any metal. Imagine today the difficulty and absurdity of trying to have a monetary system where market forces can swing the value of any currency. This also speaks to the impracticality of any crypto-curre...

Re: Monthly silver to gold ratio 1896 - 1924

Since I started the last round I would at least like to ask a question or two. I had assumed that for long periods of time when Congress (or the Government) could set a stable price for gold and silver that the ratio was stable until they changed the going rate. But this document would speak the opp...

Re: A Time Capsule of Prices

I look at this from time to time and the 1881-O series has had some similar challenges. VAMs 1D, 5, and 27 have probably held their value, and PL/DMPL coins in most grades. But the series has otherwise suffered like most coins.

A nice reminder and thanks for doing the look back.
