Re: 81-O February Examination of VAMs 30, 37, 37A, 37B, and 59

Well let's don't rule out that you found something, but this month is a mess trying to relocate family members and work with others. If I do a newsletter it will be late. I have it about half done but just had to stop for higher priorities. The die crack down through the nose is visible on VAM 27 ht...

Re: Who else is growing a Quarantine Beard?...

I used to grow one every year on vacation and discovered at the 5 day mark I always shaved it off, and it is the same now. There is something about that 5 day mark. I am just hoping that none of the lady VAMers are growing one!

California Collection

I think I have seen this topic before but cannot remember the answer. When you see a Morgan and the label has "California" on it what collection is it from?

Re: OT... How are you gonna handle the next 2 weeks?

Hunker down and be thankful for an internet connection to keep from going stir crazy. PCGS being closed is a bummer, but I can always do more die studies and wow people with 1881-O minutia.

Re: 1881 O..VAM-47....?

I was hoping for a higher res image of both sides I could enlarge to see details. I believe you are right and this is either 47 or 53 so the reverse is set.

Re: 1881 O..VAM-47....?

I only have one V47 whereas I have many V53.
http://www.1881o.com/47.html
If you click on the coin and then the obverse image you will get my large image.
Compare it to the coin you are holding.

If not a match do the same for V53.

Off Topic, BUT...

if you are tracking the coronavirus mess there is a new web site put up by Johns Hopkins that does live (or close) tracking and it is well organized and presented.

I downloaded the Trueview image and glad to try, but where are the scribbles? This is out of my narrow, somewhat obsessive, range of study.

Re: VAM Symbology?

Well like we learned with the Redfield hoard and others, rarity is just one bag away. I place almost no weight on either measure right now because I don't know how to interpret the results, so they are just subjective numbers.

Re: VAM Symbology?

JB, you bring up an interesting issue on Rarity and Interest. These are rarely revisited and I wonder if just listing Lists of Interest for each VAM would be better and just drop the other two. If a VAM makes the Hot 50 list (for example) there is an implied interest and rarity that is more current....

Re: Atlanta ANA Coin Show

I don't know to what extent the flu played into the event, but here about half our community has some type bug that is tough. I don't think Coronavirus fear played into the attendance, but this is flu season in Georgia. My wife and I are both under the weather and don't want to expose others. I had ...

81-O February Examination of VAMs 30, 37, 37A, 37B, and 59

This month we dug down into the five VAMs with the "Double Reverse Legend and Motto" description to see if we could sort out what is and isn't common to these VAMs. This was a lot of coins and a lot of time under the microscope, and it isn't over. We are doing the die crack analysis on these five VA...

I live in a subdivision where there are a number of old gold mines left over from the 1829 Georgia Gold Rush. I guess if I ever get the itch I can go to the creek behind the house.

Re: Die Studies

I think we all need to recognize the era and record keeping. Roger helped us with some data on the 1881-O and we could reconcile die usage from some reports. But on others the data conflicted or added up to numbers that just could not be matched. It was an era of manual record keeping and Mint emplo...
